Life is never about one truth. The work of one man brought clarity to the tumultuous murder of an impressive but troubled man. Knowing about Malcolm X's life, and what led him to his death, is absolutely thrilling. Full review in Spanish Go to Full Review

The narrative is carefully fitted on to black and white imagery of X at school, his mug shot and, of course, video footage, albeit grainy, of some of his prolific speeches. Go to Full Review

02/25/2022 The problem with this series is episodes 2, 3 , and 4 have nothing at all to do with the murder of Malcolm X. See more susan j @CallMeLulu 08/15/2020 I have been troubled by how many unsolved assassinations there were in the 1960s. Malcolm X among them. I could really relate to the filmmaker because he boot-strapped this film, as I did myself with a documentary I am/was making, also on a historical topic that is very sensitive and--like the murder of Malcolm X--has a lot of people who really don't want the story told. Like really, really don't want it told. This filmmaker was obsessed with bringing whomever killed Malcolm to justice. I won't share any spoilers. But when you're dealing with something as far back in the past there are myriad challenges to getting the "true story." That said, this producer did an excellent job, turned over every rock he could, and doggedly pursued all leads and possibilities. He, himself, is a Black Muslim, and he integrates the context of this fact, and the precepts of Islam into who could possibly have been the shooter and what the implications are for that, materially and beyond this mortal plane. One thing missing--and it is rather important, I think--was a detailed explanation of why people who didn't like Malcolm X didn't like him. It is not enough to hear that some people didn't like him. The director HINTS that Malcolm was construed as arrogant when he made his "chickens home to roost" vis-a-vis JFK's death, but didn't get at what other Nation of Islam Muslims disliked about Malcolm. Was he a lone wolf? Did he insult people? Was he seen as a self-promoter? Was he, in reality? The filmmaker hints at that - but he is so passionately in awe of Malcolm it seems like it would be difficult for him to explore Malcolm's shadow side in any depth. He did do so to some extent--but didn't ask the interview subjects about any negative characteristics of Malcolm X. So he is made to seem saintly. Otherwise, the director was unsparing in his zeal for the truth. He finds it, for the most part, and traveling with him to discover what he does is quite a ride. All the various people and parties who benefited from and kept their mouths closed about Malcolm X's death. Very fine work on a critically important historical topic, and man. See more 07/26/2020 Brilliant archival footage - feels like you were almost there. The evidence is put to you in such a compelling way See more 05/31/2020 Excelent. I knew nothing about Malcom x's life and its such a great story. It's disturbing to realize How dirty is the FBI and how justice is not done even for great black heroes, like Malcom. Gran documental. See more 03/21/2020 Having lived as a baby boomer through the tumultuous 60's, this unrelenting unraveling of the truth behind Malcolm X's murder by an intrepid ordinary citizen is nothing less than spellbinding. Two innocent men went to prison for the murder while the real culprit feasted off the suffering of his Muslim "brothers." The story is a harrowing shot across the bow of today's complacency in regards to government corruption and insidiousness. Malcolm's warning that freedom requires proactive responses to institutional self-interest is even more applicable today than it was when he preached to the black man's fight for justice. Malcolm's battle is our fight. He paid the ultimate price while imitation role model's like the man that killed him lived to be honored and revered by a community duped by his faux redemption. A debt of gratitude to Abdur-Rahman Muhammad who cut through the grease layered over history and to directors Rachel Dretzin and Phil Bertelsen who shot with a microscope over the investigation.
