Z: The Beginning of Everything: Season 1 (2015 - 2017)

Season 1
Z: The Beginning of Everything

Critics Consensus

Z: The Beginning of Everything presents an entertaining look at the life of Zelda Fitzgerald that's full of grandeur, splash, and old-timey wit, though the series suffers at times from a formless trajectory and over-the-top characterizations.

Zelda was a complicated woman, and Ricci definitely has the chops to play that. But the show never really lets her breathe into that realness.

Check out Zelda for the beautiful scenes along the North Shore but don't expect an especially compelling portrait to match.

The drawl is super lazy, and, too often, so is the writing on this half-hour drama.

It's Zelda's story all right, but the problem with the way Z is going about portraying her life, she's more spoiled princess than jazz-era legend.

Old-timey wit is a true delight and Z: The Beginning of Everything offers delicious snark in spades.

I have no idea what this is. I watch a lot of TV, but rarely have I seen something so formless and oddly shapeless as this dramedy premiere.

Ricci hasn't been this bubbly and fun in a role since she was a teenager, and as Zelda, she's the kind of woman you'd want to hang around.

May 10, 2019 | Full Review…

This great cast... gives us a lot of hope that the full series run will be the exactly right kind of kick-ass feminist protagonist journey that 2017 so desperately needs right now.

May 10, 2019 | Rating: 4.5/5 | Full Review…

While Christina Ricci does admirably and fearlessly inhabit the role of the creative and sometimes crazed Zelda Fitzgerald, this well-lubricated story of the beautiful and the damned just skips along the surface.

The series is well taken care of in all of its details including its cast. [Full Review in Spanish]

Jan 2, 2019 | Full Review…

The success of "Z" depends on its two main characters' chemistry, and Ricci and Hoflin have no problem burning hot and bright.

Dec 29, 2017 | Full Review…

It might begin with a horrible image of Zelda's death - a shoe in the ashes of a fire - but to begin with, at least, it feels very much alive.

Beautiful aesthetically. Absorbingly passionate romance. Moving poetic musings. Does not fall prey to a need to overly worship or overly villainize either character. Just beautifully done.

I loved it. They need to continue the story. Come on Amazon pay for a second season you have the money.
  • Feb 01, 2019
Starts very, very strong. And then it begins to meander. I feel it would have been better if it'd been created with the intention to be a limited mini-series rather than a TV series, because then the writing team could have crafted a compelling beginning, middle, and end. As it is, without a season 2 renewal, it just sort of... ends.

This story takes you back to when BIG things were happening. Its thrilling, dramatic, insightful, and educational. This show does not disappoint.
  • Jul 01, 2017
Ricci is just amazing in her best element with the style & the flourish young people of this era. Great show to taste with wine and good company.

I'm a couple episodes from finished with the first season and disappointed with the adaptation. Their story is tragic but also romantic, like much of Fitzgerald's work, and the show doesn't even seem to be attempting to depict the vibrant and energetic love that is conveyed in the book. It is too busy making Zelda into the flapper/ heroine of the story when the book depicts her as anything but.
