Josh Hurst

Josh Hurst's reviews only count toward the Tomatometer® when published at Tomatometer-approved publication(s).
Biography:

Talented, handsome, and modest to a fault, Josh Hurst obsessively writes about music and film at his blog, Stuck Between Stations. Though his friends call him a film snob, Josh prefers to think of himself as having broad cinematic horizons and sophisticated tastes. His favorite films of all time include the Three Colors trilogy, The Royal Tenenbaums, Almost Famous, Raising Arizona, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, though he'll always have a special place in his heart for the silly sight gags and punny wordplay of Airplane! and Top Secret! When he grows up, Josh wants to be just like Jeffrey Overstreet.

Blue Like Jazz (2012) 40% 2.5/4 EDIT “Christian moviegoers will find much to challenge them, but those hoping Don's journey leads him to a clear understanding of the gospel might find it a bit unsatisfying.” – Christianity Today Apr 13, 2012 Full Review The Three Musketeers (2011) 27% 1.5/4 EDIT “By the time we see sword fights onboard airships, the movie finally realizes what it needs to be -- goofy, silly fun. Too bad that comes after 90 minutes of failed opportunities.” – Christianity Today Oct 24, 2011 Full Review The Ides of March (2011) 84% 3.5/4 EDIT “To make this out to be a movie about politics is like making The West Wing out to be a show about politics. It's certainly there, but it isn't really the focus. This is really a film about moral compromise, and the deterioration of a man's soul.” – Christianity Today Oct 7, 2011 Full Review Rejoice & Shout (2010) 76% 3/4 EDIT “The music is presented here as a rich, ever-evolving, and continually inspiring thing -- and that's reason enough for rejoicing.” – Christianity Today Jun 3, 2011 Full Review Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011) 82% 2.5/4 EDIT “It all feels fresh and new again, and a closing scene makes it obvious a third movie is in the works. And I say, bring it on.” – Christianity Today May 28, 2011 Full Review Hanna (2011) 71% 2/4 EDIT “This thriller about a teen assassin packs plenty of visual style, but the story rings surprisingly hollow.” – Christianity Today Apr 8, 2011 Full Review True Grit (2010) 95% 3.5/4 EDIT “Bridges is a riot, and Damon proves himself once again. But it's Steinfeld who most amazes; more than a child actor, she's an actual performer, playing a character.” – Christianity Today Feb 25, 2011 Full Review Just Go With It (2011) 19% 1.5/4 EDIT “It's funny enough in places and with a few moments of real feeling. Too bad that for the rest of the movie, the bar's been set far too low.” – Christianity Today Feb 25, 2011 Full Review Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) 83% 3.5/4 EDIT “Some might see it as a great hipster parable, a postmodern epic for the Nintendo generation; I think it's simply a triumph of dizzying cinematic style, and it never misses a beat.” – Christianity Today Sep 24, 2010 Full Review Iron Man 2 (2010) 72% 3/4 EDIT “The best part of Iron Man 2 is Gwyneth Paltrow, and not just because of her energy and wit, or even her chemistry with the leading man. She's also the film's beating heart.” – Christianity Today May 7, 2010 Full Review Edge of Darkness (2010) 54% 1.5/4 EDIT “All attempts at profundity are silenced by the deafening anger at the movie's core. And the deeper the film delves into its layered plot, the more ludicrous it becomes.” – Christianity Today Mar 5, 2010 Full Review Pirate Radio (2009) 59% 3/4 EDIT “The end credits display a wide array of classic album covers -- from Bob Dylan to U2, The Clash to Tom Waits. That reveals what's at the movie's heart: A love for rock 'n' roll.” – Christianity Today Nov 30, 2009 Full Review Law Abiding Citizen (2009) 26% 0/4 EDIT “Shamelessly crass and blatantly stupid. There oughta be laws against films like this.” – Christianity Today Oct 31, 2009 Full Review Ponyo (2008) 91% 3/4 EDIT “The film's joys are numerous, and most of them are small and simple. To start with, the animation -- all hand-drawn -- is simply breathtaking.” – Christianity Today Aug 18, 2009 Full Review Summer Hours (2008) 94% 3.5/4 EDIT “Echoes of so many other great Binoche movies: The haunted quality of Blue, the meditative tone of Flight of the Red Balloon, even the celebratory mood of Dan in Real Life.” – Christianity Today Jun 24, 2009 Full Review The Soloist (2009) 56% 3.5/4 EDIT “Remarkable! A small, intimate kind of movie that deserves to be cradled and cherished, not slathered in crass award-show buzz and industry politics.” – Christianity Today Apr 24, 2009 Full Review The Escapist (2008) 67% 1.5/4 EDIT “It's simply an experiment in throwing a familiar premise into a blender and seeing how it looks once it's all chopped up.” – Christianity Today Apr 3, 2009 Full Review Monsters vs. Aliens (2009) 73% 2/4 EDIT “It's about a tenth as entertaining as, say, Monsters, Inc. -- one of the lesser Pixar movies -- and it doesn't reach the same heights as DreamWorks' previous monster franchise, Shrek.” – Christianity Today Mar 27, 2009 Full Review The Pink Panther 2 (2009) 13% 2/4 EDIT “It's pretty dumb, and it's predictable, and, a year from now, not many people will remember it.” – Christianity Today Feb 6, 2009 Full Review Four Christmases (2008) 25% 3/4 EDIT “Very funny, very touching, and very real, and it's not too hard to believe that, though it might not be remembered as a classic, it'll become a holiday favorite for many.” – Christianity Today Nov 26, 2008 Full Review Flash of Genius (2008) 62% 2.5/4 EDIT “For those who enjoy this sort of inspiring, true-life story and are able to sort through the good and the bad in its central character, Flash of Genius is a smart choice.” – Christianity Today Oct 3, 2008 Full Review Burn After Reading (2008) 78% 3.5/4 EDIT “A deliriously funny and delightful comedy, another exceptional movie from a creative team that seems boundlessly skilled and imaginative no matter the genre.” – Christianity Today Sep 12, 2008 Full Review Step Brothers (2008) 54% 3/4 EDIT “If you like Judd Apatow's bawdy R-rated comedies and Ferrell's inspired silliness, Step Brothers may be the most riotously funny film this side of Knocked Up” – Christianity Today Jul 25, 2008 Full Review Meet Dave (2008) 20% 2/4 EDIT “If anything in Meet Dave surprises you, you've never seen a family movie before. Instead, go to the movie only for Murphy, whose talents really shine in this role.” – Christianity Today Jul 11, 2008 Full Review WALL-E (2008) 95% 4/4 EDIT “Despite being subtle, sophisticated and light on dialogue, it's every bit the crowd-pleaser we expect from this studio: funny, romantic, imaginative, and utterly gripping.” – Christianity Today Jun 26, 2008 Full Review
