Audience Reviews for Fatal Instinct

From director Carl Reiner comes the noir parody film Fatal Instinct. When Max Shady is released from prison he goes after police officer/defense attorney Ned Ravine (who put him away); but unbeknownst to Shady, he has competition as Ravine's wife and her lover are also trying to kill Ravine. Featuring Sean Young, James Remar, Sherilyn Fenn, and Christopher McDonald, the cast is pretty decent and a number of hit films are spoofed, including Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction, Cape Fear, and Chinatown. However, the comedy is fairly broad and slapstick-ish, and lacks any real cleverness or wit. Fatal Instinct delivers a few laughs, but is a rather mediocre and forgettable film.

I will reward the film for being entertaining, but it is a misfire on most fronts. The noir style and humour serve the film well and there are funny jokes that hit or wildly miss. Assante throws everything at the role, quite similiar to Nielson with The Naked Gun and it pays off for the film. The key factor for the film failing is the slim plotting and jokes that aren't that clever. Character actors like Young and Remar are wasted in thankless roles, Young deserved a wider career in Hollywood. The filmmakers fail to create anything worthy of the talent and we suffer through all the spoof moments and weird moments, a skunk on a rollercoaster, really? Reiner was an inspired choice and had they cast Steve Martin, this might have been a very different movie. Not a great film, but worth a look. 10/12/2018.

Having seen 3 or 4 crime drama spoofs in the last coupla weeks let me tell you that it ain't as easy to do as it looks (and yet the pickings so very, very juicy) but Reiner fares well here with both his cast and the Naked Gun style of storytelling, a goulash of goofings garnered and got from 3 or 4 crime dramas like Body Heat and Fatal Attraction, and there are smiles to be had if not outright laffs. A sorely misjudged work.

A film-noir spoof. Not funny. Just not funny.
