Contrary to what she's been raised to believe, Gail's parents are not her biological parents; she was adopted. My Thoughts: "Loved the movie. I felt awful for the way Gail finds out. No one should find out that kind of news in that particular way. Her sister Joan is so jealous and catty. She's definitely the mean girl in the movie. But you see how awful she feels in the aftermath of her temper tantrum. You also feel a little resentment towards Gail for how she treats her adopted parents even though she is justified in her feelings. Great classic." See more 07/12/2011 A little late night channel surfing lead me to this Gem of a Film about the true meaning of Family.1st I must get out of the way that I was surprised & excited to see a very young beloved Fave Actress of mine, Natalie wood, as a very annoyingly precocious little sister, age 8 or 9 & quite lovely to look at already!!! This Movie was important in the way that it tackled a subject that is still tricky today ~Adoption. Gail(Ann Blyth) is turning 18, graduating at the Top of her Class,very Beautiful, the perfect Daughter, & has a Handsome Hunky Boyfiend (Farley Granger), that her, jealous of her in every way,Sister (Joan Evans) covets.Joan stumbles upon her sisters Adoption Papers, a secret the Parents (Jane Wyatt of Fathers Knows Best Fame, & Donald Cook)had never revealed.In a moment that jealousy & Envy overtook Jane, she blurts out to Gail that she(Gail) is adopted, just to hurt her.Gail is thrown into a whirlwind of emotions & resentments.She meets her real life Mother, an experience that disappoints her.It is not till her Graduation Day, that she absorbs/appreciates the privileged life that she has been provided with such love, that she realizes that Family doesn't necessarily mean that you share the same blood type.This film was the 1st of it's kind to show a Family Blended By Love & Adoption.Lovely & Timeless See more Read all reviews
