When 9 (Elijah Wood) springs to life, it finds itself in a post-apocalyptic world where humans no longer exist, and the only signs of life are sentient rag dolls like itself and the machines that hunt them. Though it is the youngest of the group, 9 convinces comrades that the only way to survive against the machines is to stop hiding, go on the offensive, and find out why the machines want to destroy them. As 9 and the group learn, civilization hinges on their success or failure.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Although its story is perhaps too familiar and less complex than some might wish, 9 is visually spectacular, and director Shane Acker's attention to detail succeeds in drawing viewers into the film's universe.

9 is a challenge to remember our roots... to not get caught in our beliefs or our politics or - most especially - become chained to the powers of our intellect alone. Go to Full Review

The new version stays so true to the original you could describe it as a feature-length short-which is not the most staggering accomplishment. Go to Full Review

Gorgeously animated, beautifully executed and incredibly imaginative, Shane Acker's 9 manages to nonetheless feel a little bit like something you've seen before. Go to Full Review

With plenty of better animated films on offer this year, it is probably best to save time and money, and watch the short instead. Go to Full Review

By telling a story that could not be filmed in live-action, Acker makes animation the wonderfully unpredictable and visionary art form it should be. Too bad he doesn’t back up his glorious animation with an equally interesting story. Go to Full Review

If the story lacks in expected profoundness, the generally impressive character designs more than make up for it. Go to Full Review

Taylor L @taylorlawson 1d The idea and plot for this movie is so original and interesting. It is set in a post apocalyptic world, from the last human scientist, creating the rag doll people named by numbers. I love how the rag dolls have their own personalities, all coming from the same person. I like the dark aspect of the movie and how scary the machines are. The entire movie basically has no human characters and it's so different from other short animated films. I enjoy how it's a little scary - but not too scary for pre-teens and above. I really don't have anything bad to say about the movie. I like how we get attached to the characters because each of them show different ages and emotions, nine, the main character is a very caring and loving character. See more Garrett K @scarfacegarrett 1d Nine is a must watch if you like anything by Tim Burton. I love the creativity with the sets of each scene needing to be from the perspective and height from rag dolls. I love the setting being a post apocalyptic dim world. I love the variation of character traits, each of the 9 dolls possess differing personalities that are relatable to us. The dolls (being built from spare fabric and materials) are neatly designed in captivating ways and they resemble us but not in an 'uncanny valley' way. The movie starts slow but paying attention and having patience is key to understanding and enjoying the intended entertainment of the film. The voice acting is nothing short of amazing with Elijah Wood and John C. Reilly being just some of the A-list actors featured in 9. I loved the emotional roller coaster and suspense the film creates and as viewers we are thrust into an unknown world. I love the unpredictability of the film and it is both heart warming and a tear jerker. See more Lily C @lils7 1d 9 is definitely a great movie if you enjoy steampunk movies, if i'm being honest I had my doubts about this movie but I really enjoyed it at the end. my top positives about this movie were the creativity around the film, like the special effects that were amazing and the plot where you find out that the scientist's gave his soul to the little rag dolls to stop his evil creation. the director of this movie definitely put his time into this movie when creating every single personality of each individual rag doll the negatives about this movie is how it incorporated the uncanny valley but this view is opinion based because I just don't like the uncanny valley but the scenes through the movie does run fast even though it explains the plot I would of liked to seen what they did with the world after they freed the souls of the fallen rag dolls See more Andrew G @AndyG234 1d 9 was a good movie. For a 2009 animation film, it has great visual effects, editing, and other things that you may not see in a movie prior to 2015. It opens with a slightly confusing start, but it definitely builds suspense. The movie started with a slower pace, then sped up around the 40-minute mark. Instead of being small humans, they incorporate a very unique type of character, ragdolls. I really enjoyed that all the characters had different personalities. The scientist gives up his soul to all 9 ragdolls, which I think added to the personal character traits of each character. I like the movie as a whole film, it was imaginative, creative, fun, adventurous, but I would not show the film to a younger audience who has less knowledge of the type of film that 9 is. Overall, it was a good short film to sit down and watch. The film does leave a few questions to be asked. For example, why is the machine taking the souls of all the ragdolls? See more Lena K @lena.king12 1d "9" is like a combination of the terminator, "war of the worlds", and "wall-e".With the war, machines, and apocalypse, there's no way you can disagree with that. The PG-13 rating is most certainly deserved. afterall, the imagery is a bit frightening and will have young kids begging for their parents to take them to see "Wall-e" so they can get all of the disturbing images out of their minds once and for all.As for the movie, I can't say that I was disappointed. With it's spectacular visuals, great action sequences, and convincing characters, "9" is a must-see for those who want to take a visually thrilling roller-coaster. See more Robert C @username19204950 1d Nine was unexpectedly decent, for a movie blending the eyes of the minions, body of sack boy, and endoskeletons and life giving method of five nights at freddy's. The very beginning was attention grabbing and built tension as 9 moves towards the window and cashes it all in with the reveal of 2 and the rat cat thing. the meeting with 1's group after 2 has supposedly died mad me feel something lesser than hate but more then anger, wish someone would have given 1 a reality check with a slap to the face. 9 convincing 5 to help save 2 by guilt tripping him whether or not he did that on purpose was a good way to give a flashback and insight to 5 and 2's relation ship. Finding out 7 was still alive was epic as she came in to save 9 and 5. Saving 2 only for 9 to get him killed was shock inspiring. I only saw a little bit more after this. See more Read all reviews
