After ratting out his Mafia cohorts, Giovanni Manzoni (Robert De Niro) and his family enter the Witness Protection Program and relocate to a French town. Despite the best efforts of their handler (Tommy Lee Jones) to keep them in line, Giovanni (now called Fred Blake), his wife (Michelle Pfeiffer) and children (Dianna Agron, John D'Leo) can't help but resort to doing things the "family" way. However, their dependence on such old habits places everyone in danger from vengeful mobsters.

It's throwaway stuff, packed with corny gags about rich French cooking and annoying Gallic manners, in which light relief is offered by the sight of our hero torturing a plumber; think The Whole Nine Yards with cheese.

it's bad. The acting is fine, it is De Niro, but geez really? He plays a mobster? What a stretch. There are some fun to watch scenes, but these people are so self serving and reprehensible it is hard to find anyone to root for. That and the ending was so dumb, relying on so many stupid coincidences, etc etc. And NO IDEA why this was set in France, no one spoke any actual French, not did that seem to impede anyone.

Luc Besson’s The Family has long been dismissed by both critics and audiences, but with time it’s become easier to appreciate it for what it is: a stylish, offbeat crime comedy with more charm than it’s given credit for. Michelle Pfeiffer is effortlessly compelling, delivering a sharp, confident performance that balances suburban normalcy with quiet menace. She’s consistently strong in most roles, but here she feels especially comfortable, grounding the film emotionally. Robert De Niro and Tommy Lee Jones elevate the material considerably, bringing credibility, humor, and gravitas to a modern-day mafia story that avoids feeling dated. Their presence alone adds weight to what could have been a throwaway concept. John D’Leo and Dianna Agron are standouts, offering memorable performances that deserved more attention. While the screenplay isn’t flawless, the direction is confident and the tone remains entertaining. It succeeds by leaning into its cast and playful tone rather than aiming
