During a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, a veteran mariner (Robert Redford) awakes to find his vessel taking on water after a collision with a stray shipping container. With his radio and navigation equipment disabled, he sails unknowingly into a violent storm and barely escapes with his life. With any luck, the ocean currents may carry him into a shipping lane -- but, with supplies dwindling and the sharks circling, the sailor is forced to face his own mortality.

A tight script compliments a smashing, heartfelt, deeply emotional performance by Robert Redford. The film grips you quickly and in spite of the extremely few spoken words it never lets you go. If you appreciate a story featuring a gamut of human feelings, and attempted overcoming of impossible odds, this will reward you.

My parents and I watched this movie on Valentine’s Day a few years ago. We thought it was rather depressing, especially with the day we watched it. Robert Redford was completely alone in the middle of the ocean, nearly struggling to survive. Not only that but it was a completely silent film and then he drowns himself at the end

Such an amazing movie. Virtually wordless. Robert Redford, totally alone throughout the whole film, and he's absolutely gripping. I got teary-eyed while watching at a few moments.

I know nothing about sailing, and was, completely, dumbfounded by obvious idiotic decisions made by our captain, along with countless stupendously stupid and non-sensical ‘scenes’. I love Redford. But, lots of folks are kissing his butt giving props to this crap show of a movie. Could’ve been handled immensely better. Metaphor is a finely tuned thing. This movie is a blown headgasket clunker. Now, for another snifter….😑
