This was the only film I’ve seen where Superman is so consistently challenged—not physically, but morally, emotionally, and psychologically—from start to finish: undermined, pre-judged, sabotaged, and questioned throughout. He resists as he did in Man of Steel, but here the pressure is relentless, pushing him to the edge, until near the end he breaks down, crying, and says, "No one stays good in this world," echoing the consequentialism and pragmatism his father, Jonathan, taught him—Jonathan representing pure consequentialism, Jor-El messianic Kryptonian ideals. Kal-El chooses to balance his parents’ consequentialism with Kryptonian hope, bearing the moral weight while being judged and manipulated by Lex Luthor across politics, judiciary, public opinion, and elites. The story was too long and all over the place, the acting is subpar, and while the action had its moments, its too damn dark to see things well sometimes. It wants to be like the Dark Knight with its complex and deep plot, but it fails miserable at it. No wonder the rest of the DCU went for a more campy/humorous route, because the darker tone wasn't working.
