Critics Consensus

It may offer energetic escapism for less demanding filmgoers, but Battleship is too loud, poorly written, and formulaic to justify its expense -- and a lot less fun than its source material.

Once the special effects take over, Berg has little room to assert his personality (or tell a story, for that matter), and the movie feels like a chore. Go to Full Review

Battleship is substantially less awful than it could have been. And for me, that may have been the biggest disappointment of all. Go to Full Review

Everything that you think may happen will happen. But it's the little differences in the process that make the movie enjoyable and its true filmmaking achievement. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

A derivative, nonsensical sci-fi project best described by comparing it to better movies. Go to Full Review

Some people will tell you that Battleship is a bad film. And they will be right. But it is still a better film than a lot of other action and effects-dominated movies out there. Especially ones based on toy franchises. Go to Full Review

See more loolool @momohajime 3d Battleship! It's the movie to watch when you're tired and don't want to think about anything. I've already seen it three times. It doesn't have a complicated plot, it makes you laugh, it destroys everything and makes you feel refreshed, and the fast pace means you never get bored. The aliens are the most vicious I've ever seen, the ships are pointlessly huge, and the weapons are completely destructive. The yo-yo-like weapons are cool. See more r d @AreDee Jan 21 the dont make them like this anymore See more Author W.A. S Jan 10 Another, MEH, it was OK, movie. It's a rainy, cold Saturday, the perfect day to watch something like this. It's your usual alien invasion, action/adventure movie starring the loose cannon who doesn't play by the rules main character. Loosely based on the game, and heavily *influenced* by Independence Day, but there are a few clever easter eggs. **Possible Spoiler** I did like the way they had to call on a group of retired sailors to help them and took a certain old ship out of mothballs. So, if you have nothing else to do or watch and are curious, curl up on the couch with a nice blanket, your coffee, hot chocolate or tea, depending on the season. See more Joel B Jan 3 I had to see it again after 14 years. A real film, not like those made nowadays. It makes you feel truly American.
