Bollywood/Hollywood Reviews

June 24, 2006
The film oozes chutzpah, but regrettably the dance scenes don't match the sparkle of the performances. A pleasing romp, nevertheless -- both studio systems should feel proud.

Mehta manages to make her film not only palatable, but a real pleaser.

Does precisely what Bollywood movies should do: It engages us with its joyousness and silliness and its unflagging commitment to surface attractions.
November 28, 2003
Not authentic Bollywood, not polished enough to pass for Hollywood and not edgy enough for indie film fans.
October 9, 2003
Though neither big nor slick, it's a joyful, feel-good spoof that makes you want to run out and rent a real Bollywood musical.
October 3, 2003
A musical comedy that's mirthless and barely musical.
October 3, 2003
Less a pastiche of the cinematic conventions of both 'woods than it is My Big Fat Greek Wedding in a sari.
October 3, 2003
Mehta's delight with her own in-joke, as well as her attractive, energetic cast, will prove infectious to those audiences who find themselves sharing the director's frivolous frame of mind.
October 3, 2003
The movie is lazily conceived, refusing to offer a single developed character or scene.
October 2, 2003
Lacks the sharpness and sophistication necessary for it to appeal beyond Indian audiences.
October 2, 2003
Promising a sexy blend of L.A. and Bombay, Bollywood/ Hollywood is just another mediocre masala.
October 2, 2003
Mehta's film has intermittent energy and wit, but if I were to rank the recent ethnic marital comedies, her musical would be a distant fourth.
October 2, 2003
Feels cramped and constrained at just about every level.
September 25, 2003
A disappointingly shallow and not terribly funny romantic comedy.
September 23, 2003
A film without a nation, without any comic grace, and often without even the slimmest technical efficiency.
September 5, 2003
It's not that it was too much of a stretch for [Mehta] to attempt this kind of cheerful domesticated fare, it's more that she didn't stretch obvious strengths far enough.
February 11, 2003
Despite cramming in numerous clichs, Mehta still manages to put a fresh and funny spin on the proceedings.
October 29, 2002
A movie that tries to fuse the two 'woods' but winds up a Bolly-Holly masala mess.
October 29, 2002
While Bollywood/Hollywood will undoubtedly provide its keenest pleasures to those familiar with Bombay musicals, it also has plenty for those (like me) who aren't.

So genial is the conceit, this is one of those rare pictures that you root for throughout, dearly hoping that the rich promise of the script will be realized on the screen. It never is, not fully.
