It upends the traditional Disney movie structure in some Interesting ways (there isn't a literal quest/journey and the ending doesn't really mirror much of their catalog) and the songs are all quite good.

It's been a while since I've seen a new animated film from Disney on the big screen. With their Pixar films recently all coming out on Disney+, I was awaiting the time I could check out a new one in theatres. Encanto is Disney's latest high-profile animated musical to hit cinemas, and while it's definitely not one of their best, it's still a very solid story with a great message for kids. This film is almost the embodiment of what it would be like to live in Disney World with a family that is obsessed with magic, but that's not a detriment. Let's dive into why I think this one should absolutely be seen by families.  After a spell enchanted this family with powers many years ago, each child receives their very own unique gift/power at a certain age. The main character in Mirabel (voiced by Stephanie Beatriz) is the only one without a gift, making her the outcast of the family. Everyone looks down on her, aside from a few caring family members, but the heart of this story revolves around her. She may not have powers, but her gift may just be that she knows how to fix a crack in the magic that is causing the family to lose their abilities. This type of story has been told countless times, but as I always say, as long as it's done well, it still works. It didn't feel wholly original, but I still think it's a very commendable film.  One thing Disney animated films usually always get right, especially with their major releases, is teaching children a good lesson. Going into Encanto, I expected there to be a story thread that paid off at the end of the film and it does, but I also found that to be the only point of the movie most of the time. It focuses very heavily on the fact that Mirabel doesn't have a gift, so much so that it started to feel forced. With that said, it does have a great payoff, so I forgave the film for feeling a little heavy-handed at times. Personally, the secondary character in Bruno (voiced by John Leguizamo) was easily the highlight of the film. The story that involved both him and Mirabel is what made the movie so enjoyable to me. In the end, as always, you can't review a Disney animated film without praising the animation team for their efforts. Once again, the animation is vibrant and leaps off the screen. The mannerisms of each character feel very real at times and the scenery feels authentic to real life. This is a very solid family film with great messages throughout and I feel that alone begs families to watch it together. It's great for kids who don't feel included. Encanto explores what I believe is one of the greatest lessons for kids, which is that it's okay to be different. Again, even for Disney, this film can feel heavy-handed at times, but it's still very good. A solid recommendation from me.
