Willy Beachum (Ryan Gosling), a hotshot prosecutor, is about to leave his post for a lucrative job at a private law firm when his boss (David Strathairn) hands him a seemingly open-and-shut case. Ted Crawford (Anthony Hopkins) tried to kill his wife with a shot to the head and is defending himself in court. All hope for a quick and easy trial flies out the door when Ted proves to be a more cunning and devious adversary than Willy anticipates.

It's straightforward and nongimmicky (you don't have to wonder whodunit because we're told in the first few minutes), involves a minimum of blood and gore, and holds our interest nicely.

A smart and snappy thriller that makes light work of its ethical dilemmas, Fracture is a little too neat and tidy to stick in the mind for long, but the Hopkins-Gosling pairing is choice, and neither comes up short.

… not trying to be more than a crowd-pleasing entertainment... while not exactly feel-good, the way the Fracture's mystery resolves is a real cut above most Hollywood hokum...it feels like the way the plot unravels is the real point of this thriller…

Intriguing from beginning to end, the cast is the main highlight, delivering a really cool dynamic that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It's just a shame they didn't have the courage for an ending where the hero wins, but the entire journey to victory only seems like he's going to lose, which is quite interesting.

Enjoyable cat and mouse courtroom drama, perhaps a bit too long, but well-acted, -scripted and -directed. Gosling holds his own with Hopkins. Extra half-star for the fetching Rosamund Pike. Good supporting cast.

Directorial familiarity regains the intellectual strength tensely drives this impeccably cast legal thriller being elegantly elevated by Hopkins’ continuous enigmatic embodiment and Gosling being the characterized conduit of a thriving hotshot representing the system’s faults in one of his best performances. (B+)
