The skills on display in Freestyle are too varied and idiosyncratic for one movie to contain, but this one at least offers a heady, rousing education in an art form that is too often misunderstood. Go to Full Review

Even if you have no previous interest in or extensive knowledge of hip-hop, Freestyle will draw you in, accomplishing that rare feat of making the creative process interesting while also telling a story. Go to Full Review

there's too little evidence that freestyling in itself deserves even the short 75 minutes allotted for this film Go to Full Review

01/15/2012 I LOVE this movie! The essence of hip-hop. It made ME want to freestyle each time I watched it. The historic overview provides a great intro to hip hop culture for neophytes AND those more familiar. Some of these relatively unknown underground freestylers are definitely dope! They speak off the top of the dome yet are worth hearing again! See more 03/16/2011 This documentary is good but it doesn't have enough rappers in it as well as info about it. It's good for what it is besides this, definetly worth checking out. 9/10 See more 01/21/2010 One of the best HipHop documentaries I've seen. See more 07/26/2009 This one is just OK for the hip-hop documentaries. It really just focuses on the rhyming element and battles and flow, but segues a lot into just corner or stage battles or interviews with street legends. It tries to bring the essence of this one element and how important it is (which it is), but it doesn?t expound as it should and name drops many MCs without giving us more about what they brought up. In the meantime, download Del?s latest LP for free from his site. Even in Apple Lossless. Again, endorsed by the artist himself ? as he?s giving the music away. He?s one of the best and is mentioned as such in this movie. http://delthefunkyhomosapien.bandcamp.com/ See more 02/18/2009 loved it! essential learning materials in hip hop 101 See more 12/08/2008 Excellent documentary. Very successfully gets across the art and spirituality at the heart of improvised hip-hop. Also provides great context, with comments from proto-rappers the Last Poets and brief footage of hip-hop pioneer Kool Herc, “freestying” African-American preachers, and free-jazz legend John Coltrane. This doc not only seamlessly traces the stronger roots of hip-hop, but it offers some good battle footage, too. Highly recommended to fans -- but particularly to those two or three people out there who still refuse to see rapping and DJing as art forms. See more Read all reviews
