critics consensus
With a weak script, uneven CG work, and a Nic Cage performance so predictably loony it's no longer amusing, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance aims to be trashy fun but ends up as plain trash. Read critic reviews

Cage appears to find his role as this second-tier Marvel Comics antihero alternately silly, tremendously fun, and the means to a decent paycheck for not all that much work.

This is a boring movie. The over-the-top outlandishness can't disguise that the whole 95 minutes represent one big snooze-fest.

Whether Cage is still paying off castles, appeasing the IRS, or rebuilding his comic book collection, it's clear he's decided, for now, to trade his talent for cold, hard cash.

Spirit of Vengeance is weighted down for long stretches in the middle, as it starts to treat its own religious hokum plotline with undue seriousness.

Shot in Romania and Turkey, the scenery is terrific and gives you something to watch other than this confusing mess. Johnny Blaze, you're just a candle in the wind, mate.

The film, though, has some redeeming qualities, including the presence of Idris Elba as the obligatory good guy, who encourages Johnny to get Danny into the protective custody of a religious order.

Apr 09, 2016So hilariously bad, it's definitely worth watching. What's weird though is that from watching this film, it really felt like it was trying to do Mad Max Fury Road 3 years before it came out...it just did a really, really bad job of it.Stephen S Super Reviewer

Feb 27, 2016Even though this film was intentionally suppose to be mindlessly entertaining, it is misguided in its attempt. There is some good action and some over-the-top Nicolas Cage but there is piss poor character development, storytelling and handling of villain(s). You don't have to dumb down a film completely for it to be entertaining and you piss off comic book fans as a result because of this film existing. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance might entertain you if you're high or drunk but if you want good entertainment go watch The Avengers instead.Mr N Super Reviewer

Oct 24, 2013In "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance," Moreau(Idris Elba) offers to rid Johnny Blaze(Nicolas Cage) of the demon that has possessed him in exchange for protecting Nadya(Violante Placido) and her son Danny(Fergus Riordan) from Carrigan(Johnny Whitworth) and his goons. But you shouldn't be too harsh on Blaze for his hesitation, considering the last deal he made. Still, he tries his best, or rather the Ghost Rider does, only to end up in a Romanian hospital. Admittedly, "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" is not very good cinema to say the least, what with its paying little attention to any form of logic. Still, it has two great advantages over its lumbering predecessor; namely, a much simpler storyline and never taking itself seriously. I mean you have to appreciate a movie as loopy as this that knows that it is loopy, is proud of its loopiness, even getting a tattoo that says 'loopy' on its right shoulder, with a patented Nicolas Cage performance to match. And as an added bonus, you get Idris Elba playing an alcoholic French ex-priest.Walter M Super Reviewer
