Was he sexist? Was he racist? Helmut Newton: The Bad and the Beautiful doesn't seem to want to answer those questions, but there's enough of a compelling story, so people can judge for themselves whether or not they want to separate the man from his art.

Indisputably, the editorial images created by Helmut Newton are some of the most iconic of the 20th century and this film Helmut Newton: The Bad & The Beautiful does a good job illustrating his work.

I wish the film had done more to explore this strange split. Boehm doesn't include much by way of negative criticism, although he does show a clip in which Susan Sontag accuses Newton of misogyny.
