The Hot Box Reviews

The story on this flick? Roger Corman commissioned a string of "women in prison" pictures after the success of his own The Big Dollhouse. This particular one was scripted by future big-baller Jonathan Demme, and directed by Joe Viola. When Corman saw what they had done, (originally titled RX Revolution,) he said: Yeah, that's great, fellas. Tell ya what. Shoot another scene where the girls have to strip down in some kind of hot box and change the title to The Hot Box. So, that's what they did. Corman, indisputably, has always known what's up. The finished product today is an artistic, message-driven movie that still features all the exploitation hallmarks you know and love. Great performance by lead "revolutionary" Carmen Argenziano. The girls? Well, there's a fake Pam Grier who...ain't no Pam Grier. Otherwise, they're respectable. A particularly memorable effort by Andrea "Bunny Kincaid" Cagan. Some occasionally disorienting editing. All in all, good times.

Jonathan Demme's introduction into the Corman School was this politically tinged T&A shoot 'em up about a group of nurses kidnapped by jungle revolutionaries and set against themselves as well as a corrupt murderous government. Margaret Markov is surprisingly entertaining as the whiny one and Charles Dierkop is always good for a scary screaming villain. The film delivers on the three Bs: Blood, Bullets, & Boobs and the final machine gun free-for-all is abnormally loud and held together by a string of rapid deaths. Not as Exploitation Epic as I was hoping, but it's good proving ground for Demme before he landed behind the camera of Caged Heat. VF.

I remember when this was playing @ the drive-in as a double bill w/ Hell Hole when I was a kid but there was no way I was going to see it. Marketed as a WIP The Hot Box is rather about some nurses that are kidnapped by some revolutionaries to help them w/ a medical facility and end up fighting along side the guerrillas. Not as sleazy as it appears even though there is a fair amount of sugar boobies & violence to moderately satisfy grindhouse fans & that Charles Dierkop is in the cast should be a thrill..what? you don't know who Charles Dierkop is? why he's the original Santa Claus killer from Silent Night Deadly Night...'31 bucks?! Merry fucking Xmas'
