The film is not perfect, but it's easy to watch and the story of friendship seems realistic enough to be connected with.

This is a drama with a capital D... Every sistah I know is going to love this movie.

Bass' script is overly ambitious (perhaps because we're so starved for these kinds of stories), biting off more than one indie debut can, or should, chew.

It's like an entire season of a mediocre nighttime soap opera crammed into a shapeless two-hour movie.

Between its amateurish direction, pedestrian cinematography, and overly plotted script, the narrative and visuals don't coalesce into a story that feels restorative, cathartic, or even joyful.

While making a sincere attempt to extol the virtues of Black sisterhood, this bittersweet ensemble drama feels too calculated in its accumulation of conflicts and feel-good resolutions.

Marriages fail, children rebel, recovery commences - but who cares what happens on such a flimsy foundation? The stories never reach resolution because the relationships were indistinct from the beginning.

The material doesn't push hard enough, refusing to become something original when dealing with profound issues of denial and fear facing characters in need of more realistic writing.

It's not groundbreaking but, written by Bass, the movie serves as a fine reminder of the pleasures of a female-focused story with the stuff of adulthood at its core.

If Not Now, When? rarely feels false, offering intimate examinations of characters who are often underserved by Hollywood norms.
