Movie Info

Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones star in this adaptation of the Jane Austin classic about a lovelorn woman who receives a second chance for true happiness. Anne Elliot was just nineteen when she fell hopelessly in love with dashing naval officer Frederick Wentworth, so when her family attempted to convince her that she was making a terrible mistake the smitten young woman hastily broke off her engagement. That decision has haunted her ever since, and despite the fact that nearly a decade has passed not a day goes by that Anne doesn't long for Frederick's embrace. Now, eight years later, Frederick has returned a highly decorated, and extremely wealthy military man. As every eligible woman in Anne's district swoons over the handsome and successful naval officer, the crestfallen young woman still holds out hope that Frederick will somehow find it in his heart to look beyond her youthful indecision, and give her a second shot at true love.

Not my favorite version, but the essence of the story is still there.

I've never read the novel so I was on the edge of my seat wondering if Anne Elliot would ever end up with the man of her dreams that she let go of eight years ago. Sally Hawkins did a marvelous job acting with her regretful eyes and sorrowful smile as she watched her beloved and wondered if he forgave her and if he would give her a second chance at love and happiness. Rupert Penry-Jones is a dashingly-handsome Wentworth and the audience is captivated by his personality. No one wonders why Anne is still in love with him after all these years! The scenes were beautifully photographed and there are many lovely scenes. The musical score is breathtaking and the pacing is never hurried yet never boring.

Oh what a nice movie! Can it ever get any better than a good Jane Austen story? So romantic...even though I found it completely frustrating that it took them until the last 6 min. of the movie to finally get together. This should have been called At least on my part. But thank goodness all went perfectly well at the end. Yay!

Television Film ITV1, April 2007 Quick Review Sally Hawkins pulls off a deeply mature and naunced performance as Austen heroine Anne Elliot, a woman desperate to repair past mistakes and win back the man she truly loves. Shergold's direction moves erratically between heartfelt and pantomime, the cinematography is a little static and the narrative bulk just oozes conventionality; yet the last half an hour leaves us completely engrossed as Hawkins has us rooting for an unlikely hero. It's all just too little, too late.
