Though the movie, like its cast of Victorian characters, is something of a forerunner to the emergence of ensemble cinematic universes, it is handicapped by its middling (even for the time) action and its crew of merely ordinary heroes, rather than extraordinary superheroes.
Messy plot and a cast striving not to be embarrassed by the amount of screenplay idiocy. Add weak direction and poor special effects in a movie that only served to bury Sean Connery's career. It has some impressive costumes and production design, but that's It.
Watchable movie gathering together various legendary characters such as Quartermain, and Tom Sawyer (?) etc to make this movie. Sadly critics didn't like it at all apparently (No surprise there).
But seriously this movie deserves a better score than what it got.
It was a fun film not a blockbuster but better than many so called blockbusters out there. I believe a B would be the score if valued on a schools scale. The mix of so many stories from old horror was interesting, this visually beautiful film is one to have in the dvd collection for home cinema.
The film is nowhere near as bad as some people make it out, and I think it has become one of those films that is "cool" to mock.
The special effects are awesome, as are all of the visuals in it with a great cast. Where it fell down for many is that it was not true to the original comic book source material, something that is more accepted now than it was back then.
It certainly is not going to win any prizes, but it is a fun popcorn movie.
At times it seems to work and then they do something that undercuts it right away.
a beautiful action film full of beautiful characters who have to defend the world from a possible war, although the twist is predictable from the beginning the film remains itering and also quite deep as it digs deep into all the characters
What should've been amazingly entertainingly, instead, was just boredom and the cure for insomnia. For a comic adaptation, it hardly has any action. We also have a story that is cliched and dull. A script that is weak. Characters that have zero chemistry. Effects that lack in good taste. With a villain that has a non-logistic thought or purpose. So yeah its bad, but since I slept through most of it, you'll forget about its existence quiet quickly.
Can't get why so much critiscism on this movie. It is nice!
FX got only this one movie
