Critics Consensus

It too often mistakes shock value for real humor, but MacGruber is better than many SNL films -- and better than it probably should be.

Movie Info

Only one American hero has earned the rank of Green Beret, Navy SEAL and Army Ranger. Just one operative has been awarded 16 purple hearts, 3 Congressional Medals of Honor and 7 presidential medals of bravery. And only one guy is man enough to still sport a mullet. In the 10 years since his fiancée was killed, special op MacGruber has sworn off a life of fighting crime with his bare hands. But when he learns that his country needs him to find a nuclear warhead that's been stolen by his sworn enemy, Dieter Von Cunth, MacGruber figures he's the only one tough enough for the job. Assembling an elite team of experts--Lt. Dixon Piper and Vicki St. Elmo--MacGruber will navigate an army of assassins to hunt down Cunth and bring him to justice. His methods may be unorthodox. His crime scenes may get messy. But if you want the world saved right, you call in MacGruber.

Critic Reviews for MacGruber

  • An action-comedy-thriller (although the term "dud" is better), MacGruber is based on a recurring American Saturday Night Live sketch -- a joke funny for 20 seconds, but not 99 minutes.

  • After a few promising opening gags, inspiration soon begins to fizzle out; the film ends up looking less smart than the material it's supposed to be parodying.

  • Despite the occasional laugh, strong performances from Phillippe and the ever-reliable Wiig and the most ridiculous sex scene since Team America: World Police, jokes that are funny within the first five minutes became stale at an alarming rate.

  • A film that poses a philosophical question fundamental to our inquiry here, namely: "Why does this exist?"

I only own a film if I can watch it again and again and again and still enjoy it. Which I can do with this film. It's stupid and I think it's basicaly all the jokes Forte and Taccone couldn't get into SNL. But damnit it's funny. This was the first sign that Wiig was going to be the comdey Queen, even in movies.

I don't even know what to say. What the hell did I just watch? MacGruber is so friggin' stupid, but it made me laugh with genuine amusement. MacGruber the character is an infantile and flippantly callous manchild who wouldn't win on Jeopardy if he were playing against Homer Simpson and Patrick Star. I think the only reason that he's treated by his US Government (no particular agency that I can discern) superiors as "the best" is because he flawlessly embodies the 80s action movie hero. This perfect manifestation of the trope is unrelated to any sort of demonstrable talent or aptitude, but entirely about his powers of hubris and one-liners. Why he is left in charge of the situation is beyond me. He proves time and time again his utter disastrous incompetance. I really like Val Kilmer and Ryan Phillippe in this, and thier characters were my favorites in this film. As it turns out, Phillippe is a great straight man. This movie has some howlingly bad moments that are painful to watch, but it's hard to fault it for them, since they're balanced by sublimely funny moments in equal number. This movie isn't merely "meh"; it transcends that. It veers violently between awful and hilarious, thus creating a very confusing milieu. Hence the half-marks I gave it.

Long thought dead special operative MacGruber (basically a dumb MacGyver portrayed by Will Forte) is called back into action to find and defeat his archenemy, Dieter Von Cunth (yes, his last name is Cunth). Cunth (played by Val Kilmer) is in possession of a nuclear warhead aimed at the State of the Union address. When MacGruber accidentally eliminates his entire team with explosives, he turns to a young Military guy, Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe) and Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig) for help. Although he is a highly decorated Green Beret, Navy SEAL, and Army Ranger, our hero amounts to a completely clueless '80s-style action hero (whose only apparent skill is ripping out a person's throat and they show several shots of him doing so) Macgruber struggles to discover something extra within himself to defeat Von Cunth, before the free-world as we know it collapses around him. I found some of the SNL skits to be quite funny and I thought this would be a good parody along the lines of "Airplane," "Hot shots" and "Naked Gun", but the crude and sexual jokes got old real fast and the sex scenes in MacGruber were also quite simply crass and disgusting. One thing is certain. I may never be able to eat celery again.

Yea, it's incredibly stupid. It has a bad beginning, but this movie is freaking hilarious! Being a fan of the Saturday Night Live MacGruber skits, I sort of new what to expect. And this movie left me completely satisfied. Of course it's flawed, but if had me laughing all the way through. The action is also really good! Surprising and awesome film!
