See more Mate P @matepolcz Nov 10 Ocean's Thirteen is pure joy to watch. From the actors, through the cinematography, to the editing. The characters are still perfectly written to fit the actors, who make you smile throughout. The dialogues are sharp even though they're sometimes unnatural, but who cares? The story is great and the motivation is a little bit more character focused. The twist is not as big as it was in the first two, but the film was completely enjoyable this way. The themes of digital versus analog and exploitation is the strongest element of the writing for me. "We're analog players in a digital world." Also, did I forget to mention how funny this film is? The direction is just unbelievable. Steven Soderberg is just toying with us and with his colleauges. The way he uses framing, camera movement, zooms, lighting and colours is just out of this world. I wonder how they achieved the colours. Is it just the lighting, or the film stock or something else? Because I believe this was before digital colour grading. He is just a master at filmmaking. I mean this must have been really hard to edit, especially when you're doing split screen. The soundtrack though isn't as good as it was in the second one, but to be fair that had an insane soundtrack. The casting is even more insane when I thought it couldn't be. The charismatic acting performances from all of the actors carry these films. On the surface, it feels like the crew is gearing up for a sharp, high-stakes heist to redeem the missteps of Ocean’s Twelve. But here’s the deal: for all its glossy setup, the movie never really hits top gear. Instead of pulling us into a tense, fast-moving caper, it spends forever stacking up details, piling on overcomplicated schemes that lean more on lucky breaks than actual cleverness. By the 80-minute mark, you’re still waiting for the big spark, and it never fully lands. The squad we love (Clooney, Pitt, Damon, Garcia, Bernie Mac) are mostly reduced to background pieces in their own game, while Pacino steals the show as the slick villain (lowkey the most fun character to watch). Chemistry between Clooney and Pitt is still there, but the banter doesn’t snap like it used to. Honestly, the standout energy comes from Casey Affleck and Scott Caan, while Don Cheadle’s moments lean more cringe than cool. Yes, it looks gorgeous (sumptuous shots, gold-and-red tones, sleek sets), but at over two hours, it drags. Instead of the adrenaline rush of Ocean’s Eleven, we get a stylish but sluggish threequel that proves franchises usually run out of fresh tricks by round three.
