Critics Consensus

The cracks continue to show in Coppola's directorial style, but The Outsiders remains a blustery, weird, and fun adaptation of the classic novel.

It's beautifully shot, written and paced, but the cast, really, is the thing. Go to Full Review

The movie is sincerely anguished, sensitive to class. It can also wobble alarmingly. Go to Full Review

It is a movie with the heartfelt old-fashioned urgency of a Hollywood film from much further back, with the Brat Pack in this film the equivalent of the Dead End Kids who made Angels With Dirty Faces in the 1930s. Go to Full Review

It’s about as realistic a depiction as West Side Story, but Coppola tells the story with a moving sympathy and romance. Go to Full Review

Uniquely and stunningly overdramatic, The Outsiders is turned by Francis Ford Coppola and his cast, against all odds, into an incredibly engrossing picture. Go to Full Review

Will read the book eventually See more Vincent S @Vin_E_At_The_Movies 4h This review is for the original cut and the extended Novel version. The Outsiders is an underrated masterpiece and Coppola’s third best movie. A visually perfect and breathtaking, perfectly adapted coming-of-age classic. A cast of future stars are all excellent here. Everything about this emotional powerhouse is strong and satisfying. After multiple viewings I see more beauty every time I revisit it. Ralph Macchio gives the most understated and strong performance of the bunch. Also my love of Matt Dillon builds from his performance here. He is as underrated as this movie is. The longer, novel version is perfect also and adds more beauty and power and great Elvis songs. The cast does a really good job at capturing the characters from the book. It is really emotional. The music sets the mood for certain scenes perfectly. The characters are very well developed. The themes that are taught in this movie are amazing. I personally think that the opening song is one of the best original songs for a movie of all time. Overall it is a really good movie and will make you cry. See more Read all reviews
