Pitch Perfect 2

Critics Consensus

Pitch Perfect 2 sings in sweet comedic harmony, even if it doesn't hit quite as many high notes as its predecessor.

I don't know if I'm just getting old, or if comedies lately are just that bland and generic. This was just okay background material. Some nice songs (and some irritating ones). Rebel Wilson is also highly irritating here. I don't mind her, and she's okay in some movies, but I don't think she really fits here. The story is just a rehash of the first one. All so so. Glad it was a free rental.

I was never a fan of the Pitch Perfect storyline but the music has always been good. The first one is just slightly better, though.

I was really looking forward to this sequel because the first film was among my favorites of that year. Favorites in the sense that it was probably some of the most fun I had watching any movie in 2012, I wouldn't have actually put it in my Top 10 of that year. With that said this film is, obviously, a slight step down from the first film, but I still think that it was a blast to watch. Of course there's the obvious sense of familiarity from seeing characters you grew to love for round 2, getting up to some similar hi-jinks. Sometimes that's what I end up hating about sequels, like it's just essentially the same film with only minor variations. The variation in this film is the that Barden Bellas, our heroines, have been ejected from repeating as national a capella champions for their school due to an incident with Amy going commando during a performance for the president. To get the Bellas reinstated at their college they then compete at the Worlds competition where a variety of other groups perform to see who's the best in the world. I will say, however, that the film definitely does take its time before it really gets going. I thought the first hour was solid, but not anything really all that special. I don't wanna say it's like a switch went off, but the film's second half is better and it really picks things up considerably. One of my favorite parts of the first film as John Michael Higgins and Elizabeth Banks as the commentators and, thankfully, they're back in this film. And they're tremendous here as well. Banks plays more of the straight woman role reacting to Higgins' incredibly inappropriate and offensive expressions and they are just hilarious here. Banks isn't a full-on straight woman, but there are parts of this movie where she does. I don't think these two come close to Fred Ward as commentator in Best in Show, but they're still excellent together and I still think they should get their own spin-off film. Maybe a spin-off film wouldn't exactly be feasible, maybe just a spin-off short film. Like 10-20 minutes of those two just improvising and being awesome. There's more girls, in the Bellas, that blend into the background, like there's Ashley and Jessica, who really don't get anything to do outside of one joke where Amy has no idea who is Ashley and who's Jessica. I think there's a couple more girls that are just there to fill up the screen, but the core group of Amy, Beca, Chloe, Emily, Cynthia and Lilly is strong. The other new addition, Flo, from Guatemala, is a pretty funny character that's always saying horrible things that happened to her before she came to the United States. She doesn't really do much else outside of that, but she's a fun character. Amy, of course, remains a comedic highlight of the film. A lot of people don't like Rebel Wilson, some for legit reasons and others for completely bullshit reasons, but I think she's great. She's got great comedic timing and delivery. The performances, as usual, are pretty awesome. The villains of the film, Das Sound Machine, put on some pretty outstanding musical performances. To the point that the Bellas would've had to pull of a miracle to believably beat the DSM. If they did or they did not, then that's up to the viewers, but I do think that the best is saved for last. While I can't really say that this film is as good, or as fun as the first one, I still had a blast watching this and would say that this is a very good movie. Perhaps not everyone will see it that way, but I enjoyed the hell out of this. If you loved the first film, then there's no way you're gonna dislike this one. Real good stuff.
