In 18th-century England, Savage House follows Sir Chauncey Savage (Richard E. Grant), a gloriously unscrupulous social climber propped up by debt and bravado. When invited to host the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, Chauncey and his razor-sharp wife, Lady Savage (Claire Foy), launch a bid to impress. As preparations spiral into duels, decadence and bloodshed, their performance careens out of control--a darkly comic satire of class, spectacle, and the art of appearing important.

The often one note-film is partly saved by the performances, particularly when Grant plays Chauncey as less rake than a creepy, fragile impostor, shown best when practising his smile in the mirror and clearly falling apart. Go to Full Review

There’s something grubbily compelling about this tale of venal people and their doomed pursuit of power. Go to Full Review

It’s too respectable to entirely ignore, yet too obvious and coarse to entertain those whose attention it courts. Go to Full Review

Amusing as it often is, Savage House proves too insubstantial to leave a lasting impression. Go to Full Review

Writer/Director Peter Glanz has pulled the curtain back from glitzy, glam period vehicles such as Downton Abbey and Bridgerton to show only the rubbish, filth, rats, and maggots in his creation. Go to Full Review

The film’s overemphasis of the 18th-century's dearth of hygiene feels like smoke and mirrors. It has little new to say about upward mobility. Go to Full Review

Lubo G @1990-01-01 4d What a deliciously fun romp through 18th century Britain that was! My whole family loved it, it was magnificently gross. It wasn't perfect, but it overcame all of it's shortcomings... From the costumes, sets and the ridiculous story, it all comes together with generous servings of snobbery and, of-course, the pox! It was like Death of Louis XIV but not as somber. Like a dark comedy version of Dangerous Liaisons in a way... or like a morbid Downtown Abbey. Like Gilded Age's nasty, old, but funny uncle. It hit the spot. Loved it! See more LESLEY B @RT19180993 Jul 3 Loved it! Gloriously evocative of bawdy Georgians, with Grant and Foy at their best, clearly enjoying themselves. Whatever the negative reviews say, the audience we watched it with laughed along with us, frequently. Yes the storyline has an inevitability about it, but we enjoyed it immensely. The music, costumes, makeup, the room sets, all added to a bit of Georgian indulgence for me. The use of lighting on Richard E Grant’s face superbly told a story all of its own. As for the grim details of health in Georgian times… they add to what I suspect is a far more realistic portrayal of the times, without any Hollywood gloss. See more Shyama P @RT06177227 Jun 25 Too one note. After half an hour, the glorious but hackneyed performances were the only saving grace in an unimaginative pastiche of British gentry and the class system. See more Howard J @Howardj Jun 24 All of the characters, not just Richard G. and Claire F., look to be having a ball as they keep an obvious plot with surprising twists moving swiftly along, revelling in an intriguing mixture of comedy, pathos and grossness. A strand of seriousness e.g. Lady Savage's love for Sir Chauncey despite (because of?) his faults adds substance to a very enjoyable film. See more Runa R @runa.r Jun 19 It’s a well-made film, with strong performances and impressive sets, but the story drags on excessively. It started to bore me—the story just never seems to move forward. Those fifteen days feel like two years. See more Anthony G @Newton44 Jun 17 Why are most people giving this brilliant film only 3 stars. It's most deserving of 5 PLUS. A fantastic period romp, beautifully acted and filmed with gorgeous music, script and costumes. Richard E. Grant and Claire Foy are masterly BRILLIANT together with the rest of the cast. DON'T MISS THIS at your peril. See more Read all reviews
