The core of the movie, revolving around the courtroom drama and the one man crusade to improve the air service, is mildly entertaining with good pacing. However, when it comes to some of the histrionics, like the foretelling of the attack on pearl harbor or ultra sonic air speed, the movie becomes absurd and shows its true propaganda colors.
A film worth adding to your collection.
There is not much to dislike about this movie, great cast and director, excellent screenplay, superb production. I did find it slow moving at times, and somehow this film doesn't soar to the greatness it should have.
THE COURT-MARTIAL OF BILLY MITCHELL (1955)
Good courtroom drama, but Gary Cooper is a little too laid-back and is completely upstaged by Rod Steiger in their scene together. Early role also for the lovely Elizabeth Montgomery of 'Bewitched' fame!
Solid if a bit slow drama of a man putting his career on the line for his what he believes rightly is the good of his country. The cast is full of great actors including an amazingly beautiful and impossibly young Elizabeth Montgomery in her first film role. She isn't totally at ease yet but delivers in her big scene.
good courtroom drama
tops in historical content and actual testimony from court marshal was used in the movie as dialog by Cooper
featuring elizabeth montgomery before she made a whole career out of twitching... but no amount of nose-twitching could save billy mitchell. gary cooper was 7 outta 10ish in his acting but his performance was a tad laid back. i saw the prosecution lawyer (bald headed bloke) in another film recently but i can't think what it was. he was good in both. i've seen otto premingers work before with the river of no return which was just as viewable as this. his movies dont seem to be masterpieces but they're all very watchable, and even re-watchable. bewitching entertainment
An excellent military court drama which is also a true story about one man's fight to convince a sceptical US army of the benefits of an air force!
