Bilbo Baggins lives a simple life with his fellow hobbits in the Shire, until the wizard Gandalf arrives and convinces him to join a group of dwarves on a quest to reclaim the kingdom of Erebor. When I revisit Middle-earth on screen, I usually go in release order: the The Lord of the Rings trilogy first, then The Hobbit. This year I switched it up and started chronologically with The Hobbit. After rewatching the trilogy (again), I’m convinced that **The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey** is the strongest entry. Shot back-to-back like LOTR, it still stands out visually and structurally. With a tighter focus and a single main storyline, it feels more grounded. The smaller cast helps, and as with most franchises, the first film benefits from setting the stage rather than juggling escalation and resolution. Whatever its flaws, I love all three. Peter Jackson keeps the story flowing—even in quiet, dialogue-heavy scenes I was never bored, always immersed in the adventure. Yes, it’s inferior to LOTR. But rewatching it nine years later made me realize something: even a criticized trilogy like this feels miles ahead of most recent Hollywood blockbusters.

(Overall Rating: 4.17/5) ( Very Good) ----- (Cinematography/Atmosphere: 4.5/5) Its Middle Earth, it's beautiful, it's immersive. If I had to give it a knock, some of the CGI doesn't live up to LOTR standards. --- (Storyline/Plot: 3.5/5) It felt like there was both a lot going on, and nothing going on at the same time. I know it's the first of a trilogy so there has to be some world building but it was stretched a bit thin. --- (Acting: 4.5/5) Martin Freeman was absolutely fantastic, Andy Serkis oozes talent, Sir Ian McKellan is a wizard. The voice acting was superb. Then there is everyone else. --- (Character Quality: 4/5) There were too many characters that we just didn't have time to get to know. So many background characters in the main party. The ones that needed to stand out did though. --- (Entertainment Value: 5/5) Its Middle Earth. I was entertained at all times. --- (Expectations vs. Reality: 3.5/5) I havnt read The Hobbit. My expectations when first viewing this trilogy stemmed completely from the Lord of the Rings trilogy and this one didn't quiet meet the hype built up over a decade.
