I guess the lesson of The Ottoman Lieutenant is simple: If you're gonna make a shameful piece of revisionist propaganda, at least make it entertaining.

What with the mishmash of accents, and Helmar's soporific voiceover, The Ottoman Lieutenant is ludicrous from start to finish.

The Ottoman Lieutenant adds little to history while shooting at historical romance.

I'm sympathetic to the filmmakers whose craftsmanship went into the movie. Absent historical context this would be adequate light far... but the weak script/dialog and narrative retcon can't be ignored and spoils their efforts.

The Ottoman Lieutenant is a war romance wherein the romance isn't made more complex by the war, nor is the war made more complex by the romance.

The by-the-numbers story never achieves its aimed-for grandeur or intensity, and the striking Turkish locations prove far more interesting than the characters.
