What to Know

Critics Consensus

Leveraging Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's classic chemistry to texturize a friendship tested by greed, The Rip tears into its potboiler setup with compulsively watchable confidence.

The Rip seems highly possible until its overblown climatic end, but even when it succumbs to the action thriller norms, it and the cast always keeps you thoroughly entertained. Go to Full Review

Joe Carnahan's crime thriller feels like a nice throwback to '90s genre pictures, but it pulls a few too many punches. Go to Full Review

I was entertained, even if for the longest stretches I couldn’t have told you who was doing what to whom. Chalk it up as yet another twist in the tale of Matt ‘n’ Ben – two Yin/Yang talents who will be yoked together for eternity. Go to Full Review

This movie has a lot of problems...particularly with how slow it is. You get some decent performances from Damon and Affleck but most of the scenes felt empty. Go to Full Review

With a cast of this caliber, this should have been a stronger film. It felt dumbed down and like they held their punches. Go to Full Review

Maybe if Carnahan took advantage of the Damon-Affleck chemistry, injecting some comic relief, the film would be more entertaining. He doesn't. Go to Full Review

Bill T @btreakle 9h “The Rip” This new film from 2026 starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck is a real good uh movie about cops on the take. The action is swift and gut wrenching. This film was well written and produced as well as being directed very well and all the scenes in the movie we're realistic. I don’t believe this film will win any Oscars but still I liked it and Highly recommend this film. See more John H @Hihner 2d It was ok. Not the worst movie ever. But I wasn’t bored. See more Arthur R @RT88125953 Jul 9 Two gripping acts of excellence, led by the iconic Damon/Affleck duo, sadly falls off in the final third as it leans too heavily on familiar tropes to wrap up the intriguing plot. Still, that should not discourage you, it's a decent film, with strong performances that stays enjoyable throughout... but it could have been a ripper!! See more Tyler F @Tyler-The-Reviewer Jul 8 I actually loved this movie until the end turned into overblown action. I really liked the story overall though. See more Steve C. @AverageWatcher23 Jul 8 I went in fully expecting the usual Netflix slop, complete with the predictable agenda-driven messaging that's become their trademark. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised by how restrained it was. Ben and Matt's chemistry is as strong as ever, and the plot keeps you guessing while building genuine suspense. Credit where it's due—this was far better than I expected. See more Ola G @Ollie1972 Jun 21 "The Rip" was inspired by the true story of Miami-Dade County Police Captain Chris Casiano, and tells the story of a group of police officers who, during a raid on a hidden cash operation, find their trust broken down as team members suspect each other of trying to steal a large sum of cash. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon still have chemistry, director Joe Carnahan knows how to create believable action sequences (even if they become overly long in this case at times) and it's a pretty solid film within the genre it belongs to. However, we have seen way too many films about bent cops, the plot twists never seems to end and it's full of clichés and nothing really new under the sun. It´s entertaining during the running time, but you won't remember it once the lights come on. See more Read all reviews
