Critics Consensus

It may not be the finest film to come from the Marvel Universe, but Thor: The Dark World still offers plenty of the humor and high-stakes action that fans have come to expect.

Loki is the only character who makes himself new and interesting. When he is around, Thor: The Dark World becomes a different film altogether. You wish there was more of him. The rest of it is metal clanking. Go to Full Review

This feels like a really, really, expensive episode of Doctor Who. In a good way. Go to Full Review

Save for Hiddleston's too-brief supporting turn, this is mighty forgettable stuff, a by-the-numbers sequel to what was already the slightest and least entertaining of the 'Avengers' components. Go to Full Review

Thor: The Dark World is a great continuation in the Marvel Universe and it’s a better direction than Iron Man 3. Go to Full Review

The high-fantasy worldbuilding and story align with what the Norse mythological superhero's adventures should be – generic villain notwithstanding. Go to Full Review

Dives deeper into the lore and mythology of the character more than other MCU entries, but there might be a reason other entries are more surface-level adventures. Go to Full Review

Aryaman S @AryamanS 3h Thor: The Dark World may not advance Thor’s character arc, but the film remains an entertaining entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is certainly worth watching for comic-book movie fans. Alan Taylor brings a darker visual sensibility to the franchise, while Brian Tyler’s score adds a sense of grandeur and momentum throughout. The film benefits from strong production design, costumes, visual effects, and cinematography. Chris Hemsworth continues to embody Thor with charisma and confidence, while Tom Hiddleston once again steals scenes as Loki, whose presence provides much of the film’s emotional and dramatic weight. While the narrative is not among Marvel’s strongest, Thor: The Dark World succeeds as a visually and sometimes narratively engaging fantasy film and remains an enjoyable and underrated chapter in Thor’s journey. See more Drewpiter T. @RT06299656 1d This movie is overrated, and as a Loki movie it would be amazing. The problems really are the villain and somber the film feels. This movie needed more hope, and more dimensionality. See more Carlos I @Bolgsven Jun 11 The Dark World has some strong ingredients, but it never becomes the great Thor movie it could have been. Thor and Loki are easily the best part of the film, and their scenes have emotion, tension and humour. Frigga’s death also gives the story real weight. The problem is that the main villain, Malekith, feels too flat. He looks interesting, but his motivation is not personal enough and he does not feel memorable. Jane Foster also deserved a more active role instead of mainly being used because the Aether is inside her. The film also struggles with tone. It wants to be dark fantasy, sci-fi, romance and comedy at the same time, but it never fully commits to one clear identity. The Aether matters later in the MCU, but here it feels more like a plot device than a truly frightening threat. Overall, it is watchable and has good moments, especially with Loki, but it needed a stronger villain, clearer emotional stakes and a bolder direction. See more Carter H. @quality_finds Jun 11 Not a bad movie, 3.5 stars because the conflict was good, the emotional drama was well done effecting the audience, the casting was brilliant, and the movie was interesting Why only 3.5 stars? I personally didn’t love this movie, Thor was great but in comparison I can’t award this movie to be as good as mostly any Marvel I can’t say I disliked it but it isn’t a movie I’d recommend 3.5 stars, weird start, good ending See more Brendan T. @JackTheSipper712 Jun 10 Enjoyed it but wasn't amazing See more Anythang S. @AnythangStudios May 24 I like how it focuses more on Asgard than Earth, but its plot is mediocre and its villain is downright weak.
