Peter G @Petermovielover 01/20/2024 Back in the day Gerard Depardieu made some exceptional films. CYRANO DE BERGERAC & JEAN DE FLORETTE come to mind. Here he plays the musician Marin Marais who looks back on his career to when he was a student of Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, a famed string player in the 17th century. This subject, despite favorable reviews did not appeal to a mass audience & yet, for me, the combination of superb period atmosphere, music & performances was a special one for me. To view the interaction between an initially reluctant teacher & a sometimes rebellious student was given a masterful treatment here & it held my attention throughout. Actually Depardieu does not appear as much as does his real life son Guillaume, playing the younger Marais, who died tragically in an accident a few years after the film was released. This bit of casting was a risk but the younger Depardieu, fortunately, comes through credibly. I wanted to draw attention to this unusual but involving film which is also is a fine experience & not only for those involved in the profession of baroque music. See more Red T @RT43513976 07/09/2023 An All Time Classic with phenomenal acting across the board and a incredible moving soundtrack to boot with all the music coming from the actual scenes themselves. The cinematography is filled with deep focus, intimate dimly lit close ups and a memorable setting. The editing is excellent and weaves masterfully between each member of the family without ever feeling jumpy or bloated. The only issue really is the pacing towards the end doesn't really build towards much and feels a bit dragged out but its still very interesting and engaging.
