Critic Reviews for American Horror Story Asylum
All Critics (44) | Top Critics (23) | Fresh (34) | Rotten (10)
It's a solid setup. And given the writers were tasked with coming up with a completely new storyline for an established hit, the foundation seems well laid and primed with numerous avenues to explore.
Like a good scare? How about a bad scare? Or a thousand scares, good and bad and crazy? Season 2 of American Horror Story, subtitled Asylum, is for you.
Less scary than freaky, it's deliberately unhinged-light horror about low camp, a showcase for scenery chewing and giddy blasphemy, an exploitation chamber piece.
Camp, not horror, is the soul and motivating force of AHS, and if you don't delight in the fate that befalls Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine in the season premiere, you are not resonating at AHS's frequency.
The first AHS rose above some of its twisted storytelling. Asylum simply keeps sinking -- from one depth to another.
One final warning before you plunge in: AHS: Asylum crosses a line for television (which is getting harder and harder to do). It goes beyond dark all the way to clerical black, the scourge of all light.
The season as a whole was so smooth and so terrifying that it's probably the only one I will continue to go back to and watch.
American Horror Story: Asylum is filled with plenty of dark secrets, sinister twists, and unexpected turns - but unfortunately the one thing this psychologically invading season lacks is thoughtful explanation.
The show grabs you, shocks you and keeps you guessing. The only question left unanswered at season's end is "Will Season 3 be half as good?"
Right out of the gate, the show's second season, Asylum, established itself as something darker, weirder and more ambitious.
In a season that had so much potential, it was rather surprising to find it a bit of a letdown.
This show has pushed the boundaries. By doing it so subtly, Murphy allows his commentary to slip under the cultural radar. And in a show that many felt was over-saturated with story lines and general information, subtlety is a wonderful addition.
Audience Reviews for American Horror Story: Asylum

Jan 12, 2021Asylum is easily one of the best seasons of American Horror Story, it's so well directed and contains better horror than most mainstream horror films today. Grade: A+

Dec 12, 2020American Horror Story: Asylum, revolves around a very diverse mix of horror elements, all centered at the mental Institution Briarcliff Manor. Although the sheer number of antagonists may feel intimidating at first, the setting creates a nice sense of Paranoia, which is enhanced by some unforeseeable twists. The characters are well developed, and convey a very credible sense of hopelessness which adds a psychological component to the otherwise very physical horror of the series. Together with the variety of horr aspects, who range from medical gore to alien abduction, the second season of American Horror Story should satisfies most viewers expectations. Even though a high number of sideplots is featured, Asylums main plot is pretty coherent and the finale manages to create a worthy end for most of the characters. All in all, American Horror Story: Asylum is a very well rounded season and leaves no wish open when it comes to scares and shocks, as well as a thrilling and hazardous atmosphere. By far the best season of AHS, Asylum contains everything you would expect of a horror series and leaves little room for disappointments. I would recommend this season to people who have enjoyed The Ward, Stonehearst Asylum or A Cure for Wellness.

Nov 25, 2020great !! The best I ever view.
-
Oct 05, 2020American Horror Story: Asylum is darker in both tone and visual than it's first season and is filled with more interesting characters, premises, and villains.
-
Sep 05, 2020Best horror show/movie I have ever watched. Extremely violent, but with a purpose. I feel that the best horror entertainment (movies or tv) have interesting characters and this season is no exception. So entertaining. The only negative was the weird Adam Levine subplot. If you didn't like Season 1, you should still give this a chance.

Aug 11, 2020American Horror Story Asylum is underrated. While yes this plot is very dark, it is very complex and intriguing. The season is historically accurate, as it portrays the '60s beautifully through outfits, cultural references, political movements, and the dominance of religion in society.

Jul 16, 2020Esta segunda temporada le hace honor a su nombre presentando un impactante historia de horror americana y por lejos la mejor de la serie
-
Jul 15, 2020A fantastic horror that dives into madness and evil. This season confronts us with barbarous acts that shock, but also hit upon a deeper remembrance. Jessica Lange and Lily Rabe are especially exceptional.
-
