Critic Consensus: Complications has no shortage of ambition - or intriguing characters and ideas - although its complicated plot occasionally beggars belief.

Watching Matt Nix's new USA series, Complications, is like taking an advanced seminar in unintended consequences. A fun, thrilling, twisty, and at times mind-blowing seminar.
I'm not sure these characters are interesting or detailed enough to fill the gaps left by the absence of the cases-of-the-week, but at least Complications is aiming for something ambitiously driven by character and a serial arc.
After years of successful, high-quality dramas with a light, breezy touch, the network has decided to cast its lot with the more somber and complex dramas popularized by rivals like AMC.
The only way a series like Complications can continue is if the complications keep getting more complicated. Since they're already approaching silliness, the show's condition is probably terminal.
Complications gets more interesting episode by episode, strengthened by good supporting performances and intriguing moral questions, even if creator Matt Nix sometimes struggles to shape his individual pieces into a cohesive whole.
