Conviction: Season 1 (2016)

Season 1

Critics Consensus

While Hayley Atwell proves a strong and likable lead, her charisma alone cannot elevate Conviction from its worn and familiar trappings.

    Oof, that was Rotten.

    Meh, it passed the time.

Critic Reviews for Conviction Season 1

All Critics (41) | Top Critics (23)

Because while there is certainly great, emotional drama to be mined from a show that overturns wrongful convictions and perhaps makes a larger social commentary about the state of the justice system, Conviction sadly isn't it.

A paint-by-numbers procedural reaching for a bit of Scandal's glitz.

Oct 3, 2016 | Full Review…

The plot is ridiculous, the writing is bad and Atwell seems embarrassed to be there.

Oct 3, 2016 | Rating: 1/4 | Full Review…

Conviction is so into overkill, it's hard to tell what to take seriously. Maybe Atwell has that same feeling about this lame procedural consolation prize for ABC's failure to establish her better vehicle Agent Carter.

Atwell's performance is solid enough, particularly when Armstrong is around for badgering purposes. But the weekly skirmishes with "The System" end in ways that at best strain credulity.

The cast has to shine, and it only flickers. And the obnoxious-but-brilliant leader story has seen better days.

I love Hayes and Wallace's relationship and watching them admit their genuine love to each other is amazing.

Jun 22, 2018 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

It's more than little baffling that ABC canceled the much-stronger Agent Carter to put [Hayley] Atwell on a cliche-ridden mess like Conviction.

Dec 20, 2017 | Full Review…

Conviction has a Scandal-esque vibe with its fast-paced action and the structure of a charismatic lead supported by a crack team who have their own special skill sets. Whether the premise can sustain itself... remains to be seen.

Oct 28, 2016 | Full Review…

While Conviction is a fine show, it's lawyer-scandal-cop formula is also a dime a dozen. Agent Carter was one of a kind. It's hard not to think about its absence when watching these first few mediocre episodes.

Oct 3, 2016 | Rating: 2.5/5 | Full Review…

The real guilty parties here are the writers who've populated this show with so many stock characters and clichéd twists that it's difficult to become invested in any of the outcomes.

Oct 3, 2016 | Full Review…

In a generous mood, I'll say it's fair.
