Mike P 01/27/2023 A lost gem from the 70s. Nobody remembers this show, with Kristy Macnichol, Meredith Baxter Birney and Matthew Broderick's dad; about the well-to-do family of an attorney living in Pasadena and dealing with life in the tumultuous 1970s. Think of it as a more serious version of Eight Is Enough, without the laugh track. (And both shows have Willie Aames!) The acting is uniformly excellent; with Kristy Macnichol winning two Emmy awards on this show! And this is still a record for an actor who's under 18. Though it was the 70s the show dealt with groundbreaking issues like rape, homosexuality, stalking, violence in the suburbs, infidelity, disco-dancing, adoption, alcoholism and drug abuse; even childhood mortality! One of the Lawrences even drowned before the pilot starts! That was groundbreaking; to show a situation like this on a family show back in 76! And patriarch Doug cheated on matriarch Kate before the pilot as well! Very daring for a show of that era! Occasionally the show could be a little slow; or a little schmaltzy; but overall it was very entertaining and definitely went against the grain of what was popular back then. It was a very entertaining show and you should check it out. This is a class act TV show that you forgot even existed in this era! See more Read all reviews
