Policeman Carl Winslow has enough to deal with on the job. But when he gets home, he still has to handle kids, his wife, Harriette (whose character was first introduced on the sitcom "Perfect Strangers"), his mom, a sister-in-law and Urkel, the nerd next door who doesn't understand that he doesn't actually live with the Winslows.

David S. @baxter667 Nov 6 Though the first season of this long running show is right in the middle of the road as far as interesting stories, the second season is where Family Matters really shines. One of the best seasons, this is when the show discovered its formula, a balance of family friendly humor and serious issues. The show bounces up and down in its remaining seasons, but as far as a show that should be watched, everyone should try this one!!! See more BRizz 2 @TheMovieSearch Aug 5 Family Matters: Season Two is just as fun as the first season, with all the characters feeling even more engaged. This time around, the writers do a great job of spacing out the cast, giving you time to connect with each one individually and find your joy in their unique personalities. You learn quickly that Harriette Winslow (Jo Marie Payton) and Carl Winslow (Reginald VelJohnson) are the comedic foundation of the show—they’re the glue that keeps everything grounded. Their chemistry is strong, and their parenting dynamic continues to be both hilarious and heartfelt. Meanwhile, Laura Winslow (Kellie Shanygne Williams) and Steve Urkel (Jaleel White) are still in the early stages of their iconic back-and-forth, giving us a taste of what’s to come without letting Urkel overpower the ensemble just yet. One of the most enjoyable parts of this season is watching Rachel Crawford (Telma Hopkins) and little Richie Crawford (Bryton McClure). They’re simply a joy. Rachel’s sass and independence are perfectly balanced by Richie’s cuteness and personality. They add such warmth and charm to the family dynamic—it’s hard not to smile whenever they’re on screen. Then there’s Eddie Winslow (Darius McCrary). You love Eddie, even though he comes off as that classic “dumb jock” you remember from high school. It’s like, how did Carl and Harriette—two intelligent, sharp parents—end up raising a kid who sometimes seems like he’s made of bricks? But that’s what makes Eddie lovable. He’s goofy, but full of heart. Now let’s talk about the queen herself—Estelle “Mother” Winslow (Rosetta LeNoire). I’m telling you right now: I can’t. I just can’t. Every time she steps onto the screen, it’s her moment. She’s the scene-stealer. Her timing, presence, and sheer command of every line she delivers is incredible. She doesn’t just show up—she owns the room. There’s no question she’s one of the show’s secret weapons. That said, you can definitely feel a shift happening this season. Season One felt like a true family sitcom—with comedy, heart, and broad appeal—but Season Two starts to lean into Urkelmania. You can tell the writers were starting to pivot toward Steve Urkel (Jaleel White) becoming the focal point, even though the original intent seemed more centered on Harriette (Jo Marie Payton) and the Winslow family as a whole. Thankfully, in this season, Urkel’s presence is still balanced enough not to overtake the show—yet. Overall, Season Two is a strong continuation that’s still full of laughs, lovable characters, and memorable moments. The cast chemistry remains top-tier, and even with the shift in focus beginning to show, there’s still plenty of family heart holding it all together.
