When Futurama is good, it's really, really good, and "The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings" is one of those "really good" episodes.

And as far as codas go, it doesn't get much better than Fry's squeaky, beginner-level holophoner sendoff, which I'll always at least partly consider Futurama's final bow.

Futurama's first series finale is still its best, demonstrating the show's deft balance of absurdist, gag-heavy comedy and unexpected poignancy.

In its final moment, Fry plays for Leela with his own hands, at her request: the result is a story told clumsily and not always well, but with passion and love. I can't think of a better note to end on.

Though there were some shaky moments early on, the new episodes of Futurama ultimately reminded us why we wanted the series back so badly in the first place.
