Tv Season Info

A musical comedy-drama about the social outcasts who make up the glee club at McKinley High School in Lima, Ohio. In the first series, Spanish teacher Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) starts the club and protects it from the malevolent schemes of diabolical cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), all the while dealing with a troubled marriage and a mutual attraction to McKinley's quirky guidance counselor (Jayma Mays). The club's original core members are made up of pop-superstar wannabe Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), football quarterback Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith), and singers Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley), Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz) and Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale). Football player Puck (Mark Salling) and cheerleader Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron)—who spends much of the season dealing with a pregnancy—also join the club. The ragtag bunch of misfits rally to compete at a local Sectionals contest before facing off against even tougher competition at Regionals. The season's big guest stars include Neil Patrick Harris, Josh Groban and Olivia Newton-John, while Broadway favorites Kristin Chenoweth, Idina Menzel and Jonathan Groff play recurring characters.

Critic Reviews for Glee Season 1

All Critics (49) | Top Critics (27)

The series spent its first 22 episodes redefining the TV musical in the terms of the series' title. Unafraid of emotion, "Glee" at its finest opened us up to joy.

Remember when it seemed like Glee was going to be a sensational way to combine your musical fix and your teen drama fix?... It lasted like two months, tops, but it was a time.

Shows as satisfyingly entertaining as Glee rarely come along, and when they do, they mystify a lot of people, who get nervous because they're not used to such glittery packages crammed full of wonder on TV.

They're flashy and can be briefly shocking or funny or even moving, but the more they go over-the-top, the less impact they have for me.

At its best, Glee is not just entertaining but elating, dramatizing Breakfast Club-quality teen angst with the aid of tight production numbers covering new and classic popular songs.

Cynical, sweet and inestimably funny, Glee is by far the best show of the fall TV season.

May 19, 2009 | Full Review…

The combination of offbeat characters, fantastic performances, and a willingness to take on controversial topics in a sensitive manner make this show a winner despite its many flaws.

Feb 27, 2019 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

The craziness is balanced with a heavy helping of social commentary, which might come off heavy-handed, but is always tempered by the outbursts of music. You name it, they sing it.

Feb 27, 2019 | Rating: 8/10 | Full Review…

The show may be almost too ridiculous to watch, but it sure as hell will be entertaining.

Feb 27, 2019 | Rating: 7.9/10 | Full Review…

Jane Lynch brings so much to the role that no matter how cheesy an episode may get, her mere presence makes it tons of fun.

Feb 27, 2019 | Rating: 3.5/5 | Full Review…

Glee leaves you wanting nothing more than to divorce yourself from reality -- specifically, the one the show has created for itself. When you're craving an escape from your escapism, it's time to exit stage left.

Feb 27, 2019 | Rating: 5.1/10 | Full Review…

Murphy and co-creators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan know just what they're doing with their slant on American high school archetypes, and do nearly all of it with their tongues lodged firmly in their cheeks.

Aaaa, this show is fantastic, I mean I know it's kind of meant for teens but, I love it, it is truly touching and it explores perfectly the topics that it is trying to explore, not the best season, and it definitely has episodes that make you wanna throw yourself out the window, like the Gaga one, ew, but it is just great
  • Dec 06, 2019
Glee is good, although it can be too "dumb" and edgy sometimes
  • Nov 27, 2019
The beginning of a wonderful series. Glee is (according to my wife and to me, also) the best of television. In its way, Glee is the best program ever, since it incorporates great qualities of TV through the ages - music, production, comedy, (melo)drama, and relatable, well developed characters. It is a joy to watch these scared, scarred, misfits become the powerhouses they grow into.
