Mel Fisher is no stranger to overcoming hardships -- he has never let blindness hold him back -- so when he and wife Joyce divorce, family members rally and use the transition as an opportunity to learn more about themselves and grow closer. Joyce takes the freedom of the split as a chance to revisit her youth, constantly borrowing clothes from her teenage daughter, Katie, and joining her on trips to the mall. For 11-year-old Henry (whose adult self narrates the story), the upheaval is marked by the arrival of his father's new guide dog, Elvis.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

J.K. Simmons is as charming as ever, but Growing Up Fisher fails to surmount its plodding premise.

This isn't a show about the sightless, although Simmons (who is not blind) is terrific at conveying the limits and hurdles. The story is more concerned with the particular challenges of parenting through divorce than with blindness. Go to Full Review

[The show is] well written and actually quite engaging, but what is most interesting is the focus on the brighter side of splitting up. Go to Full Review

There are some sweet moments in Growing Up Fisher, and J.K. Simmons is always fun to watch, but there's no way it's getting a pass. Go to Full Review

07/14/2014 You'd need a really good creative team to maintain the quality of this show. I guess it was an impossible task See more 04/23/2014 I love this show!. Does it get low scores because you can sit down and watch it with your kids and not worry one minute what will happen in the next scene. Its funny...for the whole family. Seems the only shows getting good scores are full of blood, violence and sex. See more 03/05/2014 Really cute show!!! A break from the other raunchy comedies on tv now!!! See more Read all reviews
