What to Know

Critics Consensus

Overflowing with dynastic intrigue and the rough-hewn grit that distinguished creator Steven Knight's previous historical dramas, House of Guinness goes down smooth like a silky pint.

House of Guinness is on its knees, hands clutched around a threadbare top hat, begging me to call it "swaggering". We’re on Steven Knight’s turf here, where history has always carried a fire in its belly. Go to Full Review

It’s a teeming caper, superbly directed by Shankland, about family and ambition, and the fight for Irish independence, the scenes of opulence and ornate Victorian elegance intercut with the kind of steampunk aesthetic of the functioning brewery itself... Go to Full Review

House of Guinness is never dull. In fact, as family sagas go, it is, yes, rip-roaring. Go to Full Review

We’re happy to report that the new eight-part Netflix series “House of Guinness” is not all suds and foam, but a glass act. Go to Full Review

Watching House of Guinness is like getting a crash course about Ireland’s past from a history buff in a pub who has already sunk a few pints of the black stuff. Go to Full Review

At the very least, the next time someone puts a glass of that famous dry stout in front of you, this show will make you look at it in a different light. Go to Full Review

George C @Georgio999 Jan 14 It is a series loosely based on fact but with a lot of fiction weaved into it. The Guinness characters are real, however, the rest of the cast are mainly fictional and events of time are interwoven but not necessary associated with the Guinness dynasty. That said, it makes riveting viewing. I love James Norton's character, Rafferty, the Guinness's fixer. I would love a second season. See more Varadhia A @vtsurx Jan 14 Need a season 2 ASAP! See more Lucile F @lucile_fl Jan 4 If you like peaky blinders, you will love House of Guiness. It is essentially the same but Irish version and the historic aspect of the story of the Guiness that we all drink adds another layer of interest to the show. Really well made, great creative director and acting - definitely worth a watch ! (it is only 8 episodes so you will not be signing you life away either) See more Giuli M @gmoram16 Jan 3 I ABSOLUTELY need a season 2 omg See more Chris C @KhiLani2 Dec 31 House of Guinness was a really good show overall. The acting was strong across the board, and it’s based on a real-life story, which makes it even more interesting to watch. The storytelling and atmosphere pull you in, especially if you enjoy historical drama with strong characters. It’s not quite on the level of Peaky Blinders, but it’s definitely close. If you’re a fan of Peaky Blinders, I’d recommend giving this one a watch — it has a similar vibe and enough depth to keep you hooked. See more Carrie S @CarrieSun Dec 30 I watched all available seasons and it ended quite badly. I suspect (hope) the writers can finish this series. All characters need a resolution. I'm not a fan of fictionalizing a real family that lives among us. If that is the idea, then a different name, other than Guinness would be better. As a former copyeditor, keeping fact from fiction is a good thing. I watched this online and on television. Both had sound problems and I had to rewind to hear what was actually said several times. Most times I guessed. The music was often too loud and didn't fit the series. Part of not hearing lines was the overbearing music, which I liked but it didn't work here. As a big fan of James Norton, (Grantchester, Happy Valley) I enjoyed his performance, but the last bar fight he was in seemed like his ending. Not sure why it was so dramatice with no real significance. He didn't die. See more Read all reviews
