How I Met Your Mother: Season 1 (2005 - 2006)

Season 1
How I Met Your Mother

Critics Consensus

How I Met Your Mother begins with a distinctively likable ensemble, intriguing storytelling hook, and an endearingly sweet sensibility right out of the gate -- but the jokes elicit more smiles than laughs and the series' sentimentality may divide more hearts than it conquers.

Tv Season Info

In the year 2030, a man named Ted Mosby (voiced by Bob Saget) sits his kids down to tell them the story of how he met their mother. The timeline flashes back to 2005, where a 27-year-old Ted (Josh Radnor), inspired by the engagement of his friends Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel) and Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan) decides he's also ready to settle down. Despite protestations from his friend Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris), a perpetually single womanizer, Ted decides to pursue a woman he meets in a bar one night, a local TV reporter named Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders); however, things don't quite go as smoothly as he'd planned.

How I Met Your Mother is one of the fall's standout comedies.

I can't pretend this is anything but a well-executed Friends ripoff. But I'll be there for them anyway.

How I Met Your Mother feels more like a skit in an acting class than the big time.

Mar 27, 2018 | Rating: 2/4 | Full Review…

The jokes on Mother don't feel forced, and the romance that Ted pursues with a woman he meets at a bar has a goofy sweetness to it.

Mar 27, 2018 | Full Review…

Series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have assembled a smart and funny core of characters, but what makes the series most fascinating is the promise of how the title will unfold through this season and possibly beyond.

Nov 28, 2017 | Full Review…

Not so funny but genuinely touching.

Sep 19, 2005 | Full Review…

Its central gimmick is lame and intrusive.

Sep 19, 2005 | Full Review…

I just don't get it. Sure, Neil Patrick Doogie's character was amusing, and the rest of the cast is pretty decent, but it just felt like a weak standard-fare sitcom with punch lines that were either obvious or not that funny.

May 24, 2018 | Full Review…

The Mother pilot has a surprise twist that may ultimately be the show's downfall, but the cast is so immensely likeable, they should be able to overcome any viewer disappointment with sheer charm.

Mar 27, 2018 | Full Review…

The strength of this very witty comedy is the chemistry between the five main characters.

Sep 13, 2013 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…

The comedy that does occur in How I Met Your Mother isn't enough to compensate for its inconsistencies.

Sep 19, 2005 | Full Review…

One reason is that this ensemble has already proved to be out-of-the-gate tight, a well-chosen mix of newish faces and familiar ones.

The first season was pretty good! I saw some similarities from this compared to Friends! The narration was great! Did not expect it to be Bob Saget!
  • Feb 03, 2020
Hey, remember your 20's when you were completely obsessed with finding a wife/ husband? Nah me either, because nobody is like that. Still, this is premise of the show. More generally, it's a story about a bunch of people who gradually become convinced of their status as the greatest people on earth. They are not. The characters personalities span the entire spectrum from utter bellend to insanely boring. Series ends with them getting their heads surgically removed from their colons.

Season One was a great intro in to the series. It laid a great foundation for the characters while also giving each charter enough room to grow on us as the viewer. It shows us the gullible and hard working side of Ted. While also showing the acting skills of Neil Patrick Harris playing a character which is this he complete opposite of his persona

Wonderfully cast and hilarious to boot! The first season of HIMYM sets the stage for some great antics and a heartwarming story that being CBS could last a lifetime.
