Depraved underachieving might look easy, but for the egocentric Mac, Charlie, Dennis, Frank and Dee, it's an art form; "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" follows "The Gang," the owners of the unsuccessful Paddy's Pub; a group of degenerates who loves nothing more than to scheme, conspire, and mostly revel in each other's misery; whether gaming the welfare system, exploiting dumpster babies, pretending to be crippled, impersonating officers or faking funerals, The Gang never stoops too low in the name of making a buck.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's coarse humor and shabby style may be rough around the edges, but this sinful sitcom wrings a surprising amount charm from its band of charmless underachievers.

Who am I tell you what's offensive? It's certainly better when TV strives to be original -- "It's Always Sunny" does it with flair -- than when it regurgitates the same tired formulas. Go to Full Review

"Philadelphia" delves into subjects not normally seen in TV comedy... And it doesn't dance around them. It tackles them head-on in sometimes uncomfortable ways. What makes it palatable is that it is often laugh-out-loud hilarious. Go to Full Review

Young viewers might find it daring and naughty -- but young viewers shouldn't be watching. Go to Full Review

There's something oddly endearing about characters to whom social consciousness means a continuing awareness that they couldn't get dates for their high school prom. It may not be OK, but it sure is funny. Go to Full Review

The series is not exactly Cheers, but then again, it's not Showtime's Brothers either. Belly up to the bar and enjoy this one. Go to Full Review

In its own modest, eccentric way this show is trying to fill the gap left by Seinfeld. It has problems, but also has potential. Go to Full Review

Jonas V Oct 10 It's funny sometimes but mostly not really. Why is this show hyped so much? See more Natasha R @MsNatasha Aug 20 Always Sunny is a go-to show. It is inappropriate and honestly unhinged. The first season is funny, but it's not their best. If you are starting from the beginning, just push thru. It will get better...the characters get worse...it's television gold. See more matthias s @Thescreenasvor Jul 13 Season 1 of *It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia* feels like a rough draft with flashes of brilliance. The Gang is already diving headfirst into controversial territory, but the tone is scrappier and less polished than later seasons. Without Frank, the dynamic leans more grounded—though still wildly inappropriate. It’s clear the show is testing boundaries, both in humor and structure, and while not every joke lands, the ambition is there. At 71%, it’s an uneven but promising start, laying the groundwork for the chaos to come. You might not be sold yet, but you can tell something different is brewing. See more Joseph L @Joseph504 Jun 18 Simply one of the most consistent hilarious shows. See more Sheila A Apr 9 Hilarious it’s good to laugh in these days and times.
