Adapted from the famous novel by Robert Louis Stephenson, this contemporary thriller follows Dr. Tom Jackman as he uses an array of modern technlogy in an increasingly desperate attempt to hold at bay a deadly foe: Mr. Hyde, his savage and ruthless alter ego. Although they time-share the same body, Mr. Hyde is significantly stronger and faster than Tom -- and his strength is still growing. The stakes get even higher when Hyde learns of the existence of Tom's beautiful wife, Claire, and their two children, whom he uses as pawns in his power play against Tom. The doctor relies heavily on his assistant, psychiatric nurse Katherine Reimer, to help him somehow keep Hyde in check. Peter Syme is Tom's best friend, Miranda Callendar is a private eye who stumbles onto Tom's bizarre double life, and Benjamin is an American overseeing a mission to overtake and capture Hyde.

Jekyll ... falls victim to a far more sinister force -- lame, unfocused storytelling. It's "full of the unexpected," all right, but don't expect it to make much sense. Go to Full Review

Jonathan K 08/28/2021 Jekyll was, by and large, absolutely brilliant. The dialogue is incredibly smart (precursor to Sherlock, being from the same writer), the twists and revelations are generally unexpected and unpredictable, the acting is great, the music is solid, the editing tight and the cinematography & lighting top-tier for television in the 2000's. The modern update is intricately-woven, and the decision to have both Jackman (the Jekyll character) and Hyde be fully developed characters with opposing mental dynamics was a smart move. This allows Hyde to be both a villain and an anti-hero simultaneously, and the way that the villains are woven into the story allow Hyde to have as many Hero Moments as he does horrific ones. The only real problem with the show is that the second half isn't as good as the first half -- Different Directors, the first half notably flashier and more intricately shot and edited, but also the second half of the story isn't as tight as the first half. Additionally, the final episode does involve a few large-scale contrivances to allow the climax to play out the way it does, even if the actual final twist was a clever one. As a semi-experimental miniseries it's brilliant, if just not flawless, and I very strongly recommend this to anyone. See more Read all reviews
