Tv Season Info

Two hundred years before the destruction of Krypton, Superman's grandfather Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe) is living as an outcast after his own grandfather was executed for treason. Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos), a man from future Earth, tells him to look for the Fortress of Solitude, where he discovers not only that his planet is in danger, but that there are forces trying to change the timeline so that Superman is never born. In Season 1 of the drama series, Seg sets out to get revenge for his family's misfortune, while also trying to make sure that his enemies don't succeed at changing the timeline.

It's a shame that Krypton feels the need to lean on the Superman crutch. But while those elements are a distraction, there's still plenty of weirdness to appreciate.

... the overall storyline begins to bog down rather badly in the latter hours, making Krypton seem like too much of a slog en route to a seemingly long-in-coming payoff that's already set in stone.

The show's first few episodes have a nagging inconsequential air to them, as I wonder might be the overall case if Krypton doesn't start putting its good intent toward a more innovative cause.

Relying too much on established Superman characters in the second half led to an overly complicated and uninteresting conclusion.

Unfortunately, even those fans will have a hard time finding something that piques their interest: poorly-sketched characters suffocated by a boring story that assumes importance by attaching a bombastic score is a recipe for disaster.

Aug 27, 2018 | Full Review…

Despite some minor pacing issues, and some poorly constructed fight sequences, Krypton accomplishes what a show like Gotham has failed to do: successfully craft a television prequel that doesn't rely on its iconic hero.

A lavish production and strong central performances aren't enough to save Krypton from convoluted plotting and forgettable character arcs.

dense and weird enough on its own to eschew the usual superhero trappings, and surprisingly nuanced in its balance of class divide, palace intrigue and religious fanaticism.

But even if it doesn't, Krypton has already provided some great surprises and promising world-building. The titular planet may be doomed, but with the right focus, the show could actually thrive.
