After serving time (12 years!) for a crime he didn't commit, Detective Charlie Crews returns to his job at the LAPD but gets a cool reception from his new partner, Detective Dani Reese, and their tough boss. Constance is the attorney who finally managed to get Charlie sprung from prison after DNA evidence exonerated him of murder. Charlie's former cell mate, Ted Earley (once the CEO of a powerful company), is now Charlie's housemate and financial adviser. Charlie's post-prison police work incorporates some quirks he acquired while serving time -- a Zen philosophy and a fixation with fresh fruit.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Life is distinguished by star Damian Lewis' undeniable charisma, but let down by a rote procedural formula and one too many quirks for its Zen protagonist.

Essentially, if you add up his quirks you have the character. And if you plug those quirks into an otherwise formulaic police procedural you have the show. Go to Full Review

I enjoyed it, even in a patience-straining double bill. But it's frustrating to see an actor as good as Lewis getting mixed up in such patent tosh. Go to Full Review

There is nothing patrician about Mr. Lewis's ruddy, almost dockworker look, but he wears an aristocrat's sense of entitlement with an ease that suits his character perfectly. Go to Full Review

Damian Lewis, who plays the quirky, fruit-loving Detective Charlie Crews, simply may not be enough to keep this show on the air. Go to Full Review

Charlie is focused on enjoying the moment, every moment, which helps him gain witnesses' trust and glean suspects' motives. His quirky mannerisms are certainly a gimmick and, while amusing, Charlie isn't a believable character. Go to Full Review

Michael E. @Michael-Blue Mar 26 This is one of my favorite series of all time. I must have watched through it at least 5 times now? Each episode is so impactful and memorable that each one is like a movie. Absolutely underrated gem which was gone far too soon. See more 07/29/2022 I didn't know it got canceled until I finished the last episode available, then I searched, found out it was canceled and immediately understood why. I mean, it's a good watch if you have to much free time, but that's all it is. The 2 leads have zero chemistry. The actor who played male lead was charming and seemed like the right cast, but the actress that played his counterpart couldn't act at all and always look like she wanted to finish filming asap then get off. Granted, her character was supposed to find the male lead annoying, but compare her with the female lead in Castle and the difference is like day and night. After finishing the 1st episode of season 1, I accidentally watched the last episode instead of the second, and only until the very end of the episode that I got confused (because they mentioned some new events that appeared in the previous episodes) and figured out I skipped the whole season. The characters, particularly the female lead, didn't grow at all, the atmosphere between them remained the same from 1st to last episode that I didn't realise something was off. The supporting casts were also boring, too boring that I couldn't remember anyone's name. Actually I hardly knew who was who, aside from the roomate of the male lead, and even so I'm not sure I know what his job was or if he had one at all. Characters just kept poping up and vanishing into thin air. To make it worse, there're many weird moments in the only 2 seasons available. For example: there was a case where the victim was a gamer, the police had to check some data his computer or something, the male lead tried to lure the tech guy away so he can personally look at the data, and how did he do it? He poured coke on a KEYBOARD and messed up one of the cop's computer (to make it clear, a desk computer with a separated CPU, not a laptop) so the tech guy had to come to fix it, because now the screen was all distorted and flashing red and blue. I was hoping I was wrong and that he actually poured the liquid on the computer case under the table, which was out of screen. But the tech guy confirmed it by flipping the keyboard to pour out the coke and said something like "this's why we don't drink and type". Seriously??????? In that same episode, the tech guy tried to play the same game the victim was playing but it was too hard, then the entire department gathered around to watch him failed over and over. Mean while the male lead noticed the victim's sister was fiddling her fingers as if she was holding the consoler and playing. I mean...who does that? I don't play a lot of games but if I saw someone playing a game I like but they were making too many wrong moves, I would be yelling or at least muttering "no, jump there...kick there...so stupid!" instead of wiggling my fingers! After seeing that, the male lead quietly took the girl's hand and leaded her into the room, tapped the guy who was playing and gestured to let her play, all of that in silence. Then as the girl played, the most emotional soundtrack was played in the background, the kind of soundtrack should be use when someone was in surgery, then everybody in the room watched her play the game, their face was fulled of emotion, and so was hers. As if they were all praying for the one being operated on to come out alive. WTH is that? Why???? She was playing a game for god's sake, not deactivating a bomb that might kill thousands of people! The scene was so weird that I had to fast forward. Only if the relationship of the 2 leads was at this level of emotion, this series wouldn't have been canceled. See more 09/23/2020 Life is an exciting police drama from NBC starring Damian Lewis and Sarah Shahi. Season 1 follows LAPD detective Charlie Crews who returns to the force after serving 10 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit and being exonerated, but he's seen as a pariah and is teamed up with a disgraced detective on her last strike. Lewis and Shahi have good chemistry and make for an interesting odd couple. Additionally, the writers do an impressive job at developing the characters and the season story arc of Crews investigating the crime he was set up for. And, the show mixes in documentary style segments to tell the backstory of Crews' trail and the reactions of various people to his exoneration; giving it a meta-like quality. Also, several notable guest stars are featured, including Christina Hendricks, Garret Dillahunt, Sarah Clarke, and Titus Welliver. Life puts a unique spin on the police procedural genre and delivers a strong first season. See more Read all reviews
