Critic Reviews for Life in Pieces Season 1
All Critics (40) | Top Critics (21) | Fresh (24) | Rotten (16)
A sitcom doesn't have to spell everything out to be funny. But viewers have to believe that what is left unsaid or ambivalent has nonetheless been thought through. The creators of Life in Pieces don't seem to realize that it is missing parts.
Life in Pieces, a wacky single-camera intergenerational family comedy, is the staid network's attempt to mimic critical darling and ratings bonanza Modern Family, with edgy (for CBS, mind you) laughs and a squishy heartwarming beat at the end.
The obvious irony of the series is that Life in Pieces purports to be about the small, seemingly innocuous moments that linger longest in one's memory, while offering audiences absolutely none of those moments itself.
CBS' "Life in Pieces" puts a strong cast through an obvious variation on "Modern Family." Yet the cast is a draw, and James Brolin stands out as the loopy patriarch.
It provided enough chuckles, and we like every one of these actors so much, it will get a second look.
The show has an exceptional ensemble cast and it's engagingly funny.
Its attempts to distinguish itself only make it feel more typical.
There are some welcome faces in the family... and some amusing moments. But they can't get the tone right, moving for the vulgar almost reflexively.
It's a finish more sitcommy than the show seems to call for, but one not weak enough to upset the balance of funny and heartfelt that made me want to see a bit more, even if it was just for the pleasure of this company.
Surprisingly unrelatable as a family sitcom.
I'm still rather iffy on Life In Pieces, but I'm willing to give it a chance and see where the next few episodes take us.
Like with any series, some pieces work better than others. But as a whole, Life in Pieces just doesn't add up to anything new or terribly special.

Sep 30, 2020This is one of the best comedies in a long time. I have shown clips to people and now they are watching it. It is one of the few comedies I lol at which don't happen anymore. Sad it is gone.

Sep 10, 2018This show is the funniest thing on TV right now. The only show that has me laughing so hard and smacking the bed while binge watching
-
Feb 23, 2018I get that not everything in a sitcom is supposed to be funny, but that being said, the conventions of the sitcom genre kind of necessitate that there be a joke at least once in the series.
-
Jan 25, 2018I just started watching this show and I love it. Its so ridiculous but thats what makes it great; its so funny.
-

-
Jun 09, 2017Super cute show! Very refreshing and smart.
-
Apr 18, 2017Awesome show!! So relatable being a new parent and the relationship issues they all have. Really is hilarious.
-
Apr 07, 2017The witty title is, of course, a play on the idiom "slice of life." The alteration to "life in pieces" cleverly emphasizes the chaos of family life while still portraying the idea of simple, beautiful moments in life. It's charming and funny and speaks to the eccentricities of every day life. Yes, there have been many family sitcoms. But this one is nice in its own right even if it isn't somehow edgy or mind blowingly original. It has its own blend of classic sitcom with an original slice of life spin. I liked it. My biggest criticism is that most of the adult female characters are nearly the same character--stereotypical nagging female who does not want to be told the dress makes her look fat. But still, it finds a way to speak of family life in an uplifting way that will make you chuckle with some scenes that are outright hilarious.
