Magnum P.I.: Season 1 (2018 - 2019)

SEASON:

Season 1
Magnum P.I.

Critics Consensus

The rebooted Magnum P.I. may not be quite distinctive enough to hold up to comparisons with its source material, but a charismatic star, slickly staged action, and a handful of modern twists hint at greater potential.

Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez) is a former Navy SEAL who, after a tour in Afghanistan, uses his military skills working as a private investigator in Hawaii. Now, Magnum has to solve all kinds of mysteries, being hired by intriguing and interesting people around the island. To aid in his cases, Magnum enlists the help of fellow POW survivor TC (Stephen Hill), the owner of a helicopter tour business, and Rick (Zachary Knighton), who has connections all over Hawaii. News & Interviews for Magnum P.I.: Season 1

Critic Reviews for Magnum P.I. Season 1

All Critics (21) | Top Critics (10)

Hernandez is good in what's otherwise a pallid, uninspired facsimile of the original.

You won't be left with the old Magnum P.I., but something unnatural; an empty, unrecognizable hybrid lurching through the jungle.

Bonus points to CBS for reimagining Higgins as a former British Intelligence officer, as a woman, and for being unafraid to destroy the odd luxury sports car here and there.

Sep 24, 2018 | Full Review…

There's no evidence, however, of the old Magnum twinkle.

Sep 24, 2018 | Full Review…

The plot is serviceable, which is all it needs to be, but there are car chases and helicopter stunts and banter all the while.

Sep 24, 2018 | Full Review…

For a bit of sea, sun, cartoon violence and some droll throwaway lines for good measure, at least it beats Death in Paradise.

Jan 17, 2019 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

Cheerfully corny reboot of detective show has some violence.

Sep 27, 2018 | Rating: 3/5 | Full Review…

If this is just the beginning of all of Magnum's new adventures, I can't wait to see what's next.

Sep 25, 2018 | Rating: 4.5/5 | Full Review…

The new Magnum P.I. is a fast-moving, flighty field day that honors the original show's snappy spirit.

Sep 25, 2018 | Rating: 6.3/10 | Full Review…

[Selleck] was having a good time. He was a tourist with a P.I.'s license. There's not really any of that here in the new Magnum.

Sep 25, 2018 | Full Review…

The new version of Magnum is disappointingly generic, for both fans of the Selleck version and for people who just want a fun procedural to watch.

Sep 25, 2018 | Full Review…

The Magnum P.I. reboot feels unnecessary at best and absurd at worst, and the level of ridiculousness never reaches guilty-pleasure status.

Best serie ever, thanks to great actors and a wonderfull script
  • May 12, 2020
Magnum P.I. will be my favorite TV show now and forever.
  • Feb 07, 2020
No.... Take the name of an iconic tv show idea from the past and stick it on some poor immitation. No thanks. If they had made the show stand on its own merits maybe it could work. ..but no thanks

I am part of the generation Tom Selleck and didnt't think that a remake of Magnum would be anything worthwhile watching. But its the opposite, the stories are all different, Lady Higgins is a cool idea and the new Magnum has a different but also nice charm. Hopefully they continue with the show.

It's bright and relaxing, the characters are lovable and the scenery - absolutely spectacular. Unlike many other detective series this one doesn't make you feel sad, or angry, it doesn't give you wild sex, rivers of blood or the thrilling taste of fear, but it does give you something better - it leaves you with a sort of sunny aftertaste, this great feeling of things gone right and justice served. This is a film, where friends always have your back, where the heroes don't always obey the law, but listen to their heart and always act according to their code of honor.

Higgins as a woman really??? I'm having trouble with this o
  • Oct 23, 2019
Love the show and look forward to it every week
  • Oct 22, 2019
I was a little hesitant to try this out, after having been a big fan of the original show. The pilot didn't really grab me, but positioning of it right after another show I liked got me into regular viewing. And I must say, I'm really loving it now. Great cast, good action, witty dialogue, beautiful scenery. I kinda wish they would not always show the same coastal shot. Anyway, really worth a look. If you enjoyed Magnum in the 80s, this is different, but in its own way just as good, or maybe even better.
  • Sep 29, 2019
It suck in general! Not fun or witty or sarcastic like the original. This shit is like Magnum meets Fast and The Expendables...and thats NOT a good thing!
  • Aug 21, 2019
I really love this show. Jay Hernandez gives a stupendous performance that is very funny. Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Amy Hill, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang, and Kimee Balmilero also gave fantastic performances. The action scenes and special effects are spectacular. The writing and screenplay are great. This is my favorite new drama show of 2018, my 3rd favorite new show of 2018, and one of my favorite tv shows of all time. I am so happy it was renewed for a 2nd season. A+.
