Season 1
Medicine Ball

Critics Consensus

Medicine Ball tries to separate itself from other medical procedurals, but the profoundly weak drama lacks freshness and appeal.

Critic Reviews for Medicine Ball Season 1

All Critics (10) | Top Critics (6)

Medicine Ball can deliver neither the documentary realism of ER nor the dramatic fireworks of Chicago Hope.

The trouble with all of this is that it's nowhere near the level of ER or Chicago Hope, yet not trashy enough to be a hoot.

Aug 20, 2019 | Full Review…

If ER and Chicago Hope did not exist, Medicine Ball might almost be watchable. As it is, however, Ball is utterly pointless -- like looking at a group of actors trying mightily to reproduce a mediocre episode of the other networks' medical shows.

Director Rob Lieberman keeps the action brisk, using Steadicam shots and MTV and FBC trademarked stylistics to telegraph the urgency of the hospital setting. But his efforts add little to the stale writing and lack of interesting or original characters.

[A] series about residents at Bayview Medical Center, where humor and heartache coexist subtly. Sure, like getting a medicine ball in the head.

Aug 20, 2019 | Full Review…

Medicine Ball isn't just a terrible TV show, it's a contaminant. It shouldn't just be canceled, it should be sealed off and quarantined.

Aug 20, 2019 | Full Review…

The show borrows a little from everyone... Unfortunately the tepid hodgepodge that results from all these influences is far less than the sum of its borrowings.

Do we really need another series about medical doctors?

Aug 20, 2019 | Full Review…

So Medicine Ball isn't ER. It's still OK, and probably more than that for the post-teen audience Fox targets. The characters fit into the usual niches, but they look terrific, and most have appealing traits.

Aug 20, 2019 | Full Review…

Medicine Ball's greatest failing is that it comes on the heels of ER and Chicago Hope, two very different medical dramas that are both outstanding.
