There is nothing to dislike, it just over-eggs the pudding. Having watched six episodes in the series, I can’t decide whether the denouement is satisfying or silly. Go to Full Review
Rachel Cooke New Statesman 11/19/2024
One of the huge pleasures of these series lies in the fact that, save for McMullan and Manville, the cast each play two roles, one in the real world and the other in Conway’s story. In this sense, it’s like watching high-class theatre. Go to Full Review

This fabulously multi-layered story takes all the conventions of the genre and twists them in ways that makes every cliché feel fresh again. Go to Full Review
James Croot The Post NZ 02/07/2025
While it may outwardly look and feel like a Midsomer Murder or Agatha Christie-style caper, it’s one that requires close attention due to its story- within-a-story conceit and a cadre of actors playing two sometimes disparate characters. Go to Full Review

Moonflower Murders is a lot of fun to watch and, by the look of it, even more fun to make. Go to Full Review

As with some of Horowitz’s other projects, Moonflower Murders takes on a meta quality as it plays with notions of author, text, and reader for its audience’s amusement. Go to Full Review

Ahsan U @Sherlocklone 2d Cozy murder mystery. It does all that it needs to do to be a great murder mystery. I have already watched it twice and still loved the mystery. The characters are amazing, especially the the lead detectives (Atticus and Leslie) though Leslie isn't a detective by choice, she happens to get into situations where in she has to act. The English Country settings make it more attractive. The show is well written, directed and editing is great. It is one of those murder mysteries that makes you feel cozy and allows you to get lost in its charm. You feel you're among the characters. Though there might be some moments and characters and subplots that can sometimes feel not worthy but they still make sense. See more Leonid V Jun 22 Utterly delightful! Stylish, ironic, clever, fun, just extremely entertaining. Incredible characters, a really fantastic example of the genre. The mystery itself is quite complex, although I figured out who the killer was very quickly, it turned out it was way more complex than that. Hopefully there will be more. See more Dave N @DNeale 12/26/2024 Like the Magpie Murders, gripping, entertaining and a great concept. Also like the Magpie Murders, it fails to deliver on the concept. The idea that a novel holds a hidden secret to an actual murder is great and suggests questions like: how does the plot of the novel reflect the real-life murder? How do the different characters reveal secrets of the actual people? Unfortunately, in both cases, the answer is simple: It doesn't. The novel and the "real" murder are entirely unconnected. There is no clever analogy in the plot of Conway's novel. The novel could be literally ANY story at all. It could be a fairytale, a romance, a poem, or even a dishwasher manual, and it would make no difference. All the clues are just anagrams and symbols that could be inserted into anything. And so The Moonflower Murders is a book/show that thinks it's much cleverer than it actually is - Conway's novel does not hold the secret to the murder, a few very simple references and word puzzles hold the secret, and they happen to be sprinkled into Conway's novel. Overall, this means the Moonflower Murders is basically watching two unrelated murder mysteries at the same time, mixed up with each other, for no reason other than to make it seem like something more clever is going on than really is. It's a kind of sleight of hand. Having said that, it is fun and entertaining, and despite disappointment that the concept is not used to its full potential, I would watch more series. I'll just lower my expectations a lot in future. See more Denise T @Dee1925 12/21/2024 The first season, Magpie Murders, was so much better. This second season felt strained and inconsequential. While the Magpie was layered with grounding believable relationships, Moonflower lacked any real emotional grip. Contrived and dopey plot twists that make zero sense. Disappointing because I love Leslie Manville and Tim McMullan. See more jennifer t 12/12/2024 Anything Leslie Manville is in is always worth a look and this is yet another good one. I like the fact that you have to concentrate on each story separately. The characters are unusual - I especially love Augustus Punt and don't remember ever seeing the actor before. A couple of the actors over egg the custard - especially Daniel Mays who can be very irritating - which is why I've knocked off half a star! I don't understand why he is lauded so much. It seems that if an actor has an unusual look then he/she is considered brilliant. I hope there is another series coming next year. See more Matt N @Mattnat 11/23/2024 Having previously read the the book, I'm usually disappointed by adaptations, as they rarely live up to the pictures conjured by your mind. This is a rare exception. The stories are actually better integrated in the TV adaptation than in the original book. But the look and feel is exactly as I imagined it. Top quality whodunnit with a great cast and a wonderful feeling of fun along the way. Probably the best TV I've seen this year. See more Read all reviews
