"Once Upon a Time" tells the story of a new world, one in which fairy-tale legends and modern life collide. Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) is comfortable in her life as a bail bonds collector when Henry -- the child she gave up a decade earlier -- suddenly shows up. He is convinced that she is the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, who sent her away before the Evil Queen could cast a spell, freezing the fairytale world in time and bringing them to present-day Storybrooke, Maine. After taking Henry home, Emma decides to stay in the town to keep an eye on him, and she discovers he may not be wrong after all.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The addition of a Frozen subplot feels like a marketing angle, but Once Upon a Time Season Four shines, adding more layers to an already complex story.

It's rolling toward that place-you know, the one where TV goes to die. That the writers are trying to throw in new plotlines is only strategic. Go to Full Review

Longtime fans of Once Upon a Time could (or should) feel cheated by the show's latest tool to mask that it plays the same storylines over and over again. Go to Full Review

Unfortunately, I don't see much momentum for the Frozen season; it just appears to be an attempt at an audience grab to capitalize on the most profitable animated movie ever made. Go to Full Review

Overall, the latest season of ABC's fairy tale drama Once Upon a Time takes an already complex and meandering story and complicates it still further by adding in a whole host of new characters. Go to Full Review

Fortunately, Once Upon a Time's fourth season will not consist entirely of storylines that have to do with Frozen. Go to Full Review

Aiden B @aidenb002 Jan 5 Worst season of Once Upon A Time and that’s including season 7. The whole frozen subplot with Elsa and Anna is so corny. The other seasons work so well because they used traditional fairytales for foundation and not modern day Disney movies. Like why is cruella deville here? Yeah, she’s cool, but she isn’t even a fairytale character. The cheap costumes don’t help either. I will say that the snow queen was awesome and the actress portraying her is great. Jennifer Morrison and Lana Parillas performances are amazing too, as always, but that’s the only thing giving this season a half star. See more Eric M 12/13/2021 Piggybacking off of the success of Frozen in theaters, Once Upon a Time Season 4 does not waste any screen time with the sisters Elsa and Anna. Showing the character development of both without taking away from the main storyline, and in fact adding to it, Elsa and Anna are not only a segway into what's to come, but a great family dynamic that shapes the main characters into who they are the next season. See more 01/27/2021 Okay, so to all of the critics who didn't like this season, I have to say. They were probably using Frozen as a way of gaining some publicity but the season wasn't that bad. I'll admit it was Ouat's best season but it was pretty good. We learned more about Emma's past and about how she felt being a lonely kid alone in the foster system. Plus I think most of the fans would have been very upset if they had cut out such a huge fairytale completely out of the plot. I mean it's FROZEN how could you not put that in the storyline. It's basically the most popular Disney movie ever and it gave the writers a lot of things to mess around with because the movie wasn't (unlike many Disney movies) about romantic love i.e. man saves woman from something terrible. This let the writers mess with that storyline and apply it to Ouat. Part of why the show is so compelling is because of its strong female lead who still has that blond princess hair. So even though they could have done better with this season, it was pretty good and I think a lot of what people are saying isn't really valid. The second half of the season was better. We learned that Snow and Charming aren't completely hero's which makes their character more complex and interesting. Plus the romance with Hook and Emma was super interesting and it made me happy that Emma was finally starting to find love again after her trauma in season 3. Also the whole idea of sisters from the Frozen half of the season was really interesting because of the friendship between Emma and Elsa and how in some sort of weird twisted way it made a sort of sense which it what made it so interesting. That we as the viewers were think from the point of view of the villain and empathizing with her. The fact that the writers could make us do that means that it's really well written. Of course they've done that with every season but in the first season Regina had done so many terrible things by that point though even though we didn't completely hate her because of her past we still mostly hated her. Pan was complete evil and so we're the people working for him, and season 2 was a lot of important background info and Emma dealing with the realization of her past and what would now be her future as the savior. My point is we've never REALLY sympathized with the villain to that extent before. See more 09/25/2019 I was apprehensive about Season 4 since it was taking on a plot of a movie that had recently come out. However, the casting job was fantastic for Anna and Elsa (possibly even better than the cartoon character). Emma's character had the most development in this season and it paid off going into the drama of season 5. See more Read all reviews
